Backend Geospatial Engineer II - Remote Contract (United States)

Develop backend services, APIs, cloud pipelines, and quality assurance systems for geospatial and remote-sensing data. Support federal and water-reservoir analysis programs for CGS, a nonprofit geospatial technology organization.

Tavsif

  • Develop and maintain production backend services, APIs, data-access layers, workflow services, and reusable software components
  • Design and optimize data models and storage systems for raster and vector geospatial data
  • Build and operate scalable ETL and ELT pipelines for ingesting, processing, and transforming geospatial and remote-sensing data
  • Connect cloud storage, compute, and orchestration services to geospatial workflows
  • Produce maintainable, well-tested code while contributing to code reviews and architecture decisions
  • Support CI/CD pipelines spanning infrastructure, backend applications, data workflows, and analytical services
  • Create automated tests, validation processes, and data-quality checks
  • Verify data completeness, consistency, schema compliance, spatial integrity, metadata, and analytical accuracy
  • Perform accuracy assessments, error analysis, uncertainty analysis, spatial cross-validation, bias checks, and related quantitative evaluations
  • Develop and maintain benchmark and reference datasets for automated validation and regression testing
  • Record validation methods, test outcomes, and acceptance decisions
  • Detect data gaps, methodological weaknesses, and limitations that affect interpretation or delivery
  • Define QA and validation standards, templates, checklists, review gates, and documentation practices
  • Improve reproducibility by versioning data, code, methods, assumptions, and outputs
  • Investigate recurring defects and process failures, then implement changes that reduce risk and rework
  • Present validation findings, uncertainty, limitations, and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Contribute technical and QA content to reports, client deliverables, proposals, presentations, and publications
  • Coordinate development and quality assurance work with project managers and technical leads
  • Assist clients and partners with questions about system reliability, data quality, and appropriate use

Talablar

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in computer science, software engineering, information systems, engineering, geography, environmental science, or a related technical discipline
  • At least three years of professional backend software development experience, including substantial work with geospatial data
  • Experience using geospatial APIs and interoperability standards such as pygeoapi
  • Knowledge of geospatial architecture involving PostGIS, GDAL, raster and vector data, and OGC standards
  • Proficiency in Python for backend development, API implementation, and data pipeline development
  • Working knowledge of geospatial data standards and system architecture
  • Experience evaluating outputs from remote sensing, machine learning, deep learning, image classification, segmentation, or predictive modeling
  • Experience with cloud platforms and production operations, including deployment, monitoring, and CI/CD on AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and delivery practices
  • Experience with Git, GitHub, or comparable version-control workflows
  • Experience planning and conducting accuracy assessments, validation studies, sampling strategies, or quantitative quality evaluations
  • Strong understanding of spatial statistics, uncertainty, bias, error metrics, and analytical-result interpretation
  • Strong documentation ability, including clear and traceable records of methods, findings, and decisions
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to conduct independent, objective technical reviews
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical limitations and risks to varied audiences
  • U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States without requiring future sponsorship
  • Helpful: familiarity with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Helpful: experience with wetland science, field delineation, hydrology, geomorphology, ecology, or environmental regulatory applications
  • Helpful: experience designing or managing field data collection, expert review, or imagery interpretation protocols
  • Helpful: experience with cloud-based data pipelines, automated testing, data contracts, or production QA systems
  • Helpful: familiarity with federal scientific standards, data-quality objectives, reproducibility requirements, or formal verification and validation practices
  • Helpful: experience writing peer-reviewed publications, validation reports, technical methods, or audit-ready documentation
  • Helpful: experience supporting government, nonprofit, consulting, or other mission-driven technical projects
