Staff Software Engineer, Data & AI at Commonwealth Bank — Onsite Australia
Lead the development of Commonwealth Bank’s Business Banking customer, data, and AI platforms. Drive scalable software delivery, architecture, and engineering excellence across teams in Sydney or Melbourne.
Description
- Design and deliver scalable, resilient software for customer-channel and data platforms
- Develop and improve applications, APIs, services, and platform capabilities for critical Business Banking experiences
- Work across backend services, cloud platforms, customer experiences, and data-enabled solutions
- Set architectural direction and shape engineering decisions across squads
- Promote automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and DevSecOps practices
- Collaborate with product, business, and architecture stakeholders to achieve customer outcomes
- Mentor engineers and strengthen technical capability throughout the organisation
- Support production platforms while improving automation, monitoring, and operational excellence
- Advance digital experiences, CRM and banker platforms, data services, AI-enabled engagement, and shared platform capabilities
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering complex software in large-scale or distributed environments
- Strong practical software engineering skills
- Experience developing cloud-native applications, APIs, platforms, or data-driven services
- Ability to combine strategic technical thinking with hands-on delivery
- Experience shaping technical direction, architecture, and engineering standards
- Record of mentoring engineers and developing capability across teams
- Experience using Python, Java, .NET, TypeScript, Go, or comparable modern development languages
- Experience designing and building APIs, services, and distributed systems
- Experience with microservices and event-driven architectures
- Knowledge of modern application design patterns, including Domain-Driven Design (DDD)
- Experience spanning backend, frontend, and integration capabilities
- Safe and effective use of AI-powered engineering tools
- Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and/or CloudFormation
- Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, observability, monitoring, DevSecOps, and Agile delivery
- Experience in customer channels, digital platforms, CRM, data services, AI-enabled products, or financial services is valued but not required
