Staff DevOps Engineer, Remote United States

Lead AWS infrastructure, security, and CI/CD strategy for Ad Hoc’s Veterans Affairs digital services. Guide technical decisions, cloud migrations, and stakeholder delivery across complex programs.

Description

  • Act as a subject matter expert and autonomous individual contributor
  • Own scope, scheduling, and delivery tracking
  • Shape long-term program strategy and represent software engineering in planning
  • Recommend technical solutions and clearly explain tradeoffs
  • Lead stakeholder communications and advance software engineering and DevOps practices
  • Strengthen technical decision-making and consolidate DevOps tools across programs
  • Mentor engineers and develop as a people leader
  • Lead critical and cross-functional teams and projects
  • Present technical topics to clients, stakeholders, partners, and engineers
  • Guide cloud infrastructure and pipeline choices with attention to cost, reliability, and efficiency
  • Direct the development and operation of cloud-based infrastructure with IaC tools
  • Set direction for shared libraries, modules, and packages
  • Apply defense-in-depth security and maintain CMS/NIST alignment for ATO retention
  • Define and evolve the organization-wide CI/CD strategy
  • Integrate quality gates, vulnerability scanning, and static analysis tools
  • Plan and deliver migrations to cloud-native data services
  • Join and lead partner and stakeholder planning sessions
  • Travel periodically to collaborate with and present to clients, partners, and stakeholders
  • Refine complex products to identify constraints and opportunities
  • Verify that software meets security, SLA, and performance targets
  • Document system history, design decisions, performance, and project details for bids, demos, and client communications
  • Participate in technical depth interviews and help establish the discipline’s technical standards

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 9 or more years of professional software engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Expert command of core DevOps practices, including software installation, virtualization, containerization, and networking
  • Expertise with Terraform and Terragrunt, including scalable module design and multi-environment state management
  • Expertise with GitHub Actions and Argo CD, including the design and troubleshooting of complex cross-team CI/CD pipelines
  • Expert production experience with HAProxy and OpenResty
  • Expert knowledge of AWS services, including EKS and Kubernetes cluster architecture, workload scheduling, and lifecycle management
  • Proven ability to lead infrastructure design decisions and explain tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience aligning systems with CMS/NIST compliance requirements to support client ATO retention
  • U.S. citizenship or current legal authorization to live and work in the United States without employer sponsorship
  • Ability to complete and maintain any required government background investigation
  • Comfort working across both DevOps and SRE responsibilities
  • Expertise with observability platforms such as Datadog
  • Experience using security tools such as Trivy or Aqua
  • Experience working through the FedRAMP and ATO process
  • Experience mentoring engineers
