Special Collections Librarian – University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Hybrid)

Manage rare books and special printed materials at the UWM Golda Meir Library. Provide instruction, research support, exhibitions, public programs, and outreach.

Description

  • Manage, curate, and develop rare book and special printed materials collections
  • Create, deliver, and evaluate instruction in multiple formats
  • Support students, faculty, staff, and the public in using research materials
  • Promote collections and services through physical and digital exhibits, presentations, and public programs
  • Provide reference and research assistance within a collaborative team
  • Help supervise and staff the reading room and service point
  • Train and oversee interns and fieldworkers
  • Develop projects, programs, procedures, and library services
  • Address complex issues involving unit policies and procedures
  • Partner with other library departments
  • Participate on committees that advance librarianship
  • Advise librarians and staff outside the unit
  • Oversee daily library operations or service functions
  • Deliver specialized services and respond to complex research questions
  • Build relationships with donors, collectors, vendors, and professional colleagues
  • Connect with academic disciplines and campus units
  • Update policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve workflows and user experiences

Requirements

  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Formal coursework, training, or professional development in rare books and special collections
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required
  • Verify identity and authorization to work in the United States at the start of employment
  • Complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire
  • Submit a cover letter and resume
  • At least one year of professional experience in a special collections setting is preferred
  • Coursework in literature, art history, or art and design is preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience applying effective library instruction practices is preferred
  • Experience developing and managing collections, including preserving print materials, is preferred
  • Experience creating exhibits, public programs, and other outreach activities is preferred
  • Experience supervising student employees is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, changing environment
  • Clear and effective oral and written communication skills
  • Initiative in developing and implementing ideas that serve users
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrated commitment to user services
