Software Engineer 2 responsible for building, testing, operating, and maintaining COBOL mainframe systems at U.S. Bank. The role supports secure, reliable banking software through DevOps, agile delivery, and continuous improvement.

Description

  • Evaluate, design, test, develop, operate, and maintain software products
  • Own full-stack delivery by producing production-ready, testable code
  • Develop technical designs aligned with architectural standards, scalability, reliability, and performance goals
  • Investigate failures, recommend design improvements, and strengthen operational practices
  • Make thoughtful design and implementation decisions that support customer experience
  • Incorporate code review feedback and update work to meet established standards
  • Review code and advise teammates on engineering practices and development procedures
  • Build products in accordance with compliance and security standards
  • Apply software reliability engineering principles throughout development
  • Adopt emerging technologies and support the bank’s technology transformation
  • Support innovation, collaboration, and ongoing improvement
  • Assess, prioritize, and size work for incremental delivery, communicating blockers and delays before escalation

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
  • Three to five years of relevant experience
  • Strong working knowledge of COBOL, DB2, JCL, and VSAM
  • Proficiency with agile software development lifecycles and DevOps principles
  • Ability to understand a feature’s purpose, affected users, and impacted workflows
  • Technical capability to define and deliver solutions that meet end-user needs
  • Ability to communicate processes and results with engineers, product owners, scrum masters, third-party vendors, customers, and other product-team stakeholders
  • Working knowledge of algorithms, data structures, architectural design patterns, and engineering best practices
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Availability to work from a U.S. Bank location at least three days per week
  • Ability to follow U.S. Bank policies and procedures, including its Code of Ethics and Business Conduct and applicable workplace conduct and safety requirements
