Associate GIS Specialist, Stormwater Compliance

Support environmental consulting projects through GIS analysis, stormwater inspections, field investigations, and sampling. Work with municipal clients across Northern Virginia on water resources and regulatory compliance programs.

Description

  • Provide GIS and technical support for water resources, stormwater, and regulatory compliance projects
  • Use GIS analysis to support Clean Water Act, MS4, TMDL, and related environmental compliance programs
  • Build and maintain geodatabases, GIS applications, field data collection tools, drainage areas, and stormwater infrastructure datasets
  • Analyze and interpret GIS, inspection, sampling, and environmental data
  • Produce maps, graphics, reports, and spatial analyses with Esri GIS software
  • Conduct GIS quality assurance and quality control
  • Respond to requests for maps, infrastructure data, reports, and spatial analyses
  • Help assess and implement new GIS technologies and workflows
  • Provide GIS support and training to project staff
  • Investigate stormwater infrastructure, drainage conditions, potential illicit discharges, water quality concerns, and other environmental conditions in the field
  • Collect stormwater samples and other field data
  • Perform erosion and sediment control and stormwater management inspections
  • Capture GPS field data with tablets and mobile GIS applications
  • Record field observations and prepare inspection reports and technical memoranda
  • Support the development of standard operating procedures and technical documentation
  • Communicate with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies
  • Support municipal clients throughout Northern Virginia
  • Work with project managers and technical staff on stormwater mapping, condition assessments, illicit discharge investigations, BMP inspections, industrial stormwater compliance, mobile GIS development, drainage delineation, and MS4/TMDL initiatives

Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, engineering, natural resources, or a related discipline
  • 0–4 years of relevant experience in GIS, environmental consulting, or field investigations
  • Experience with or strong interest in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and mobile GIS applications
  • Strong organizational ability and exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team
  • Willingness and ability to perform outdoor fieldwork across varied terrain and weather conditions
  • Comfort using field equipment and lifting moderate equipment loads
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • Preferred: experience developing geodatabases and managing GIS data
  • Preferred: experience collecting GPS data and using mobile GIS workflows
  • Preferred: experience with Python or GIS automation
  • Preferred: Virginia DEQ Stormwater Management Inspector and/or Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector certification, or ability to obtain applicable certification within 12 months of hire
  • Preferred: experience with stormwater infrastructure inspections, investigations, or sampling
  • Preferred: ability to read engineering plans and construction drawings
  • Preferred: familiarity with SWPPPs, MS4 permits, TMDLs, or other Clean Water Act compliance programs
  • Preferred: experience with local government clients, Esri technical certifications, GISP certification, or interest in pursuing relevant professional credentials
  • Preferred: experience working with local government clients
