Senior Technical Lead, Generator Excitation Systems

Lead the engineering and delivery of Emerson’s high-current static generator excitation systems, from electrical design and testing through commissioning and customer handover. The role also coordinates with project, manufacturing, quality, supplier, field service, and customer teams.

Description

  • Lead engineering and delivery of 5,000 A to 10,000 A static generator excitation systems through testing, commissioning, and handover.
  • Assess customer specifications, generator data, field forcing needs, protection philosophy, grid code expectations, and project scope.
  • Select and size system components, including transformers, rectifier bridges, thyristors or diodes, protection devices, DC bus bars, cooling systems, controllers, I/O, and auxiliary supplies.
  • Create and review schematics, wiring documents, cabinet layouts, bills of materials, cable schedules, terminal plans, and system architecture documents.
  • Design high-current bus work and check thermal, short-circuit, insulation, ventilation, accessibility, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Define and verify AVR/FCR functions, voltage and reactive power control, limiters, protection logic, redundancy, trip interfaces, alarms, and DCS/SCADA connections.
  • Implement or review control logic based on SAMA diagrams, functional descriptions, approved narratives, and generator operating needs.
  • Prepare and review engineering deliverables, test procedures, compliance statements, deviation lists, risk registers, commissioning procedures, troubleshooting guides, and customer documents.
  • Coordinate work with project management, manufacturing, quality, procurement, suppliers, panel builders, software engineers, field service teams, and customers.
  • Support manufacturing and quality checks, factory acceptance test readiness, and resolution of nonconformances.
  • Configure and integrate Modbus, OPC, IEC 61850, DNP3, Ethernet networks, and plant automation interfaces.
  • Ensure compliance with IEEE, IEC, NEC, ISO, HSE, cybersecurity, customer, and regional grid code requirements.
  • Develop site execution and commissioning plans.
  • Guide site teams through installation, panel power-up, redundancy and I/O checks, loop and device checks, and system energization.
  • Carry out or support commissioning, control checks, protection and interface testing, and generator performance validation.
  • Diagnose issues with excitation controllers, power bridges, firing circuits, field flashing, cooling systems, communications, protection devices, and auxiliary systems.
  • Resolve installation and wiring deviations, site constraints, and commissioning punch-list items.
  • Update logic, graphics, databases, parameters, and test configurations as needed.
  • Produce customer commissioning reports, test records, issue logs, and handover documents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, power engineering, control and instrumentation, or a related field.
  • Eight to sixteen years of experience with generator excitation systems, static excitation equipment, power electronics, electrical panel engineering, or power generation control systems.
  • Practical experience with medium- to high-current static excitation systems, ideally in the 5,000 A to 10,000 A field current range.
  • Strong knowledge of excitation transformers, rectifier bridges, thyristors or diodes, fuses, breakers, DC bus bars, field flashing, de-excitation, crowbar protection, cooling, controllers, I/O, and auxiliary supplies.
  • Ability to design, review, and troubleshoot electrical schematics, single-line and three-line diagrams, wiring and interconnection drawings, cabinet layouts, terminal plans, bills of materials, and cable schedules.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or EPlan.
  • Working knowledge of high-current bus work, thermal performance, short-circuit withstand, creepage, clearance, insulation coordination, ventilation, accessibility, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Good understanding of AVR/FCR operation, generator voltage and reactive power control, field forcing, limiters, protection functions, redundancy, trip interfaces, alarms, and DCS/SCADA integration.
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB and PSS/E.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing engineering deliverables, compliance statements, test procedures, FAT/SAT documentation, commissioning procedures, troubleshooting records, and customer handover documents.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing quality checks for high-current excitation equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate with project management, manufacturing, quality, procurement, vendors, panel builders, software engineers, field service teams, and customers.
  • Familiarity with IEEE, IEC, NEC, ISO, HSE, cybersecurity, and regional grid code requirements.
