Senior Software Engineer, Defence R&D at Saab - Melbourne Hybrid

Lead software development for Saab Australia's defence and security research programs, prototypes, and demonstrations. Provide technical direction across multidisciplinary engineering teams while turning innovative concepts into operational capabilities.

Description

  • Lead the design, development, and delivery of software for Defence R&D programs, prototypes, and demonstrations
  • Build, maintain, and improve software using modern engineering practices, frameworks, and architectures
  • Contribute to agile delivery through planning, estimation, testing, quality assurance, and continuous improvement
  • Uphold Defence security, export control, and classified information handling requirements
  • Offer technical leadership, mentoring, and engineering expertise across multidisciplinary teams
  • Work with systems engineers, software developers, and technical specialists to convert innovative concepts into demonstrable capabilities and future products

Requirements

  • Professional experience developing software with Java, C++, C#, or Ada
  • Knowledge of object-oriented and procedural programming principles
  • Strong grasp of software architecture, design patterns, engineering best practices, and Git-based configuration management
  • Understanding of Agile methodologies and Systems Engineering principles
  • Background developing software for Defence, aerospace, combat systems, or other complex software-intensive environments
  • Proficiency in Python, Go, Bash, and/or TypeScript
  • Experience developing software in Linux environments
  • Familiarity with Docker, DDS, IBM DOORS, and the Atlassian tool suite
  • Australian citizenship
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain Australian Defence Security Clearance at NV1 level
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain access to ITAR-controlled information
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams and engage with stakeholders
