Senior Java Backend Engineer at Mercury (Turkey, Remote)

Description

  • Help build Mercury’s next-generation shipment platform through backend design, development, maintenance, refactoring, testing, and continuous improvement
  • Design and deliver a scalable, secure, maintainable, and thoroughly documented API platform
  • Partner with DevOps engineers on build pipelines, deployment tools, and automation scripts
  • Develop event collection, notification, and filtering capabilities for observability
  • Build microservices and APIs in partnership with architects and front-end developers
  • Work with QA to define backend testing strategies, tools, and practices
  • Advance engineering practices, technology choices, standards, and third-party tooling across production teams
  • Partner with the Boston Product Team to shape product requirements and roadmap priorities
  • Meet technical objectives while keeping usability central to implementation decisions
  • Research developer needs with client developers and internal stakeholders
  • Represent Mercury customers throughout product development
  • Turn complex technical challenges into clear, elegant solutions
  • Shape a distinctive Mercury shipping-platform experience consistent with the company’s brand values
  • Report to the Software Engineering Manager within a cross-functional agile team spanning Engineering, Product, and QA

Requirements

  • Fluent English communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in a software-oriented engineering discipline, such as Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, or Computer Science and Engineering
  • More than 7 years of backend development experience with Java, including at least 4 years with Java 9 or later
  • Strong command of core Java fundamentals
  • At least 3 years of recent experience with Spring Boot or Spring
  • Proficiency with Spring Data, Hibernate, and JPA
  • Experience with unit testing and test-driven development
  • Experience participating in code reviews as both reviewer and contributor, with a willingness to engage
  • Familiarity with Git and distributed version control systems
  • Knowledge of RESTful API design and implementation
  • Knowledge of backend architecture and design concepts
  • Demonstrated experience with microservices architecture
  • Experience using Kafka for messaging and streaming
  • Understanding of database technologies, especially PostgreSQL
  • Deep knowledge of foundational development technologies including OAuth, REST, and JWT
  • Understanding of object-oriented programming, algorithms, and systematic problem solving
  • Experience building large-scale backend systems with supporting developer portals or marketplaces
  • Good understanding of lean and agile values, principles, and practices
  • Working knowledge of Linux shell commands and scripting
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Ability to optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and promote collaborative knowledge sharing
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and in a team
  • Ability to prioritize customer needs and deliver work promptly
