Senior Full-Stack Engineer – Global Payment Network (Chicago, Onsite)

Lead distributed, cloud-native payment technology at Capital One, shaping regulatory solutions and engineering standards. Guide large-scale initiatives that support secure financial products for millions of customers.

Description

  • Own a varied portfolio of technology initiatives and lead developers delivering compliant distributed microservices and full-stack platforms.
  • Track emerging technologies, test new approaches, engage with technical communities, and mentor fellow engineers.
  • Work with digital product managers to build dependable cloud solutions that advance financial empowerment for millions of Americans.
  • Develop with Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, open-source relational and NoSQL databases, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS services.
  • Set technical direction across Agile teams, establishing expectations for design quality, development practices, and operational excellence.
  • Work alongside architects to define service boundaries, integration approaches, and reusable engineering frameworks.
  • Find opportunities to improve the platform through focused refactoring, technical-debt reduction, and performance optimization.
  • Help shape long-term technology strategy by assessing emerging tools and practices in a build-and-own engineering culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative discipline, such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics, or engineering.
  • At least four years of professional software-engineering experience; internships do not count toward this requirement.
  • At least two years working with public cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, cloud productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
  • This role does not offer employer-sponsored immigration support or sponsorship for new employment authorization.
  • A master’s degree in computer science or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Seven or more years of coding experience with at least two of Go, Java, JavaScript or TypeScript, Python, Rust, C#, and Scala is preferred.
  • At least three years of experience with databases and database-management systems is preferred.
  • At least three years working with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud productivity tools, or virtualization technologies is preferred.
  • At least four years contributing to open-source frameworks is preferred.
  • At least three years using front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks is preferred.
  • At least four years designing synchronous and asynchronous APIs is preferred.
  • At least three years building CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code solutions, and automated testing frameworks is preferred.
  • At least three years using Git-based version-control platforms such as Git, GitHub, or Bitbucket is preferred.
  • At least three years diagnosing technical problems in cloud environments is preferred.
  • Experience using modern AI-assisted coding tools and IDE copilots.
  • At least one year mentoring engineers and supporting professional growth within technical teams is preferred.
  • At least one year applying observability practices to locate and optimize performance bottlenecks in distributed systems is preferred.
  • Experience with interactive AI tools beyond basic code completion.
  • Experience leading cross-functional engineering programs or large-scale technical initiatives.
  • Experience defining and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.
