Senior Data Engineer, ClickHouse Infrastructure — Solidus Labs (Hybrid, UK)
Senior Data Engineer responsible for scaling ClickHouse infrastructure behind Solidus Labs’ trade-surveillance platform. The role covers high-volume data pipelines, cluster architecture, reliability, and observability across real-time and batch workloads.
Description
- Design and optimize ClickHouse data architecture, including table engines, partitioning, materialized views, and storage policies
- Manage ClickHouse cluster sizing, topology, and capacity planning for real-time ingestion and T+1 batch processing
- Lead data reliability and deduplication practices across ClickHouse and related pipelines
- Build and enhance monitoring, alerting, and observability for replication, merges, query latency, and resource usage
- Act as the company’s ClickHouse specialist and guide engineering teams on query optimization and data modeling
- Partner with the ClickHouse vendor to investigate issues, assess capabilities, and deliver improvements
- Work with analytics, machine learning, and product teams to improve storage, schemas, formats, and query performance
- Set and uphold ClickHouse standards for schema versioning and data governance
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science
- At least five years of hands-on software engineering experience with Java, Rust, or Python
- Eight or more years of experience building data engineering systems and pipelines for high-volume, low-latency production environments
- Professional experience developing low-latency, real-time systems that process billions of events daily
- Advanced practical knowledge of ClickHouse, including cluster architecture, table engines, replication, sharding, and query optimization
- Strong experience with Apache Kafka, Spark, Airflow, Kubernetes, Redis, Snowflake, and caching systems
- Expert SQL and query-tuning capabilities, including ClickHouse materialized views, projections, TTLs, and MergeTree optimization
- Experience using observability platforms such as Prometheus and Grafana
- Demonstrated curiosity, independence, and initiative in identifying and delivering solutions
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills, with the ability to coach and influence engineers across distributed teams
