Senior Backend Software Engineer — London Hybrid

Build Go and Python services for ExTrac’s decision-intelligence platform in a senior backend engineering role. Own APIs, databases, streaming pipelines, and cloud infrastructure supporting high-stakes institutional decisions.

Description

  • Build and run backend microservices and data pipelines for ExTrac’s decision-intelligence platform
  • Drive ambiguous work from requirements discovery and technical design through production release with limited supervision
  • Take full ownership of services, including consolidating or retiring superseded systems
  • Help shape and lead system architecture and design decisions
  • Create APIs for internal users and customers with well-defined, versioned contracts
  • Define storage schemas, indexing approaches, access patterns, and system boundaries
  • Develop Go and Python microservices for collecting, processing, and querying data
  • Uphold production expectations for latency, cost efficiency, reliability, and instrumentation
  • Build and operate high-throughput streaming data pipelines
  • Strengthen system scalability, resilience, and response times
  • Tune databases and improve index performance
  • Collaborate directly with analysts to turn product feedback into system improvements
  • Work with AI and frontend teams to deliver cross-functional capabilities
  • Enhance deployment workflows, service templates, observability, and engineering environments
  • Complete a four-step interview process covering a hiring manager discussion, technical assessment, competency interview, and founder interview

Requirements

  • Eligibility to obtain UK security clearance
  • Citizenship of a NATO member state, Australia, or New Zealand
  • At least four years of professional software engineering experience
  • A track record of launching production-grade services and owning features through delivery
  • Proficiency developing microservices in Go or Python
  • Strong knowledge of distributed systems, databases, and software engineering patterns
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and infrastructure as code
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
  • Strong communication and collaborative working skills
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation and discuss requirements with engineering and wider team colleagues
  • Broad technical coverage spanning deployment pipelines, database behaviour, and security engineering
  • Interest in how the product is used, with a willingness to incorporate analyst feedback into requirements discussions
  • Current experience with Go-based microservices is desirable
  • Experience with Elasticsearch and PostgreSQL is desirable
  • Experience with streaming or event-driven pipelines is desirable
  • Experience with feature flags and trunk-based development is desirable
  • Experience operating multi-tenant systems with strict data-isolation requirements is desirable
  • Experience developing software for defence, government, or compliance-constrained environments is desirable
