Residential Counselor, Developmental Disabilities

Support people with developmental disabilities in Vinfen residential programs across Massachusetts. Help build independence, coordinate daily support, and strengthen community connections.

Description

  • Provide one-to-one and group support to residents in a residential program.
  • Teach skills that build independence, self-advocacy, and quality of life.
  • Keep the residence safe, secure, clean, and well maintained.
  • Help residents connect with their communities, build friendships, engage with family, and access local resources.
  • Organize recreational and social activities that encourage inclusion and emotional well-being.
  • Promote residents’ choices and decision-making, and support self-advocacy, employment, volunteering, and community participation.
  • Train and assist residents with behavioral and rehabilitative interventions, safety practices, appointments, money management, daily living skills, shopping, meal planning, cooking, and household tasks.
  • Help residents access assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
  • Provide transportation when needed.
  • Observe residents’ physical and emotional well-being and report changes to a supervisor.
  • Track residents’ funds and maintain records, including progress notes, behavioral and academic data, incident reports, communication logs, activity schedules, and community membership logs.
  • Obtain, store, administer, document, and dispose of medications in line with MAP requirements and applicable regulations.
  • Coordinate with nurses, case managers, the Visiting Nurses Association, families, and other relevant parties.
  • Attend required training and staff meetings.
  • Follow internal and external regulatory policies and standards.
  • Handle housekeeping, snow removal, trash disposal, and other home maintenance.
  • Cover shifts at other homes or programs when assigned.
  • Advocate for residents’ human rights and provide physical intervention or first aid in emergencies.
  • Help develop, carry out, and document ISP/PSTPs and clinical programs.
  • Complete other related duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Related experience or training of at least one year is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required upon hire.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must have held a valid U.S. driver’s license for at least six months.
  • When using a personal vehicle, must have adequate insurance and a safe driving record.
  • Must pass a driver background screening.
  • CPR certification must be obtained within two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification must be obtained within two weeks of hire.
  • MAP certification must be obtained within 150 days of hire.
  • PBS Tier 1 training must be completed within 150 days of hire.
  • Safety Care training must be completed within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, lift at least 25 pounds, and assist with daily living activities.
  • Must be able to use a computer, calculator, copier, and printer.
  • Must communicate effectively in speech and writing.
  • Must understand advocacy, empowerment, self-advocacy, participatory planning, crisis intervention, household management, and personal care skills.
  • Must work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Must work professionally and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be sensitive to cultural, religious, racial, disability, and gender considerations.
