Production Bioinformatics Engineer — Labcorp (California Remote)

Build scalable clinical genomics tools and workflows supporting Labcorp’s healthcare services. Automate laboratory processes, visualize genomic data, and strengthen production reliability.

Description

  • Build tools and workflows for clinical genomic data analysis and bioinformatics automation
  • Create web applications for genomic data visualization and exploration, including IGV-based and browser-native viewers
  • Improve observability, monitoring, alerting, and reliability across laboratory and bioinformatics production systems
  • Find and resolve automation gaps and scalability constraints
  • Deliver product enhancements with limited supervision
  • Diagnose complex issues spanning interconnected systems
  • Use bioinformatics algorithms, statistical methods, and software engineering practices
  • Partner with molecular biologists and laboratory stakeholders on assay development, workflows, and genomics applications
  • Assess genomic and operational data quality while improving consistency, quality, and traceability
  • Apply regulatory expectations for verification, validation, and documentation
  • Write technical documentation for compliance and operational work
  • Balance feature delivery, operational support, incident response, and continuous improvement in production

Requirements

  • Master’s degree plus at least 3 years of experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, or engineering; or a Ph.D.; or bachelor’s degree plus at least 6 years of relevant experience
  • At least 2 years of experience with short-read and long-read sequencing platforms such as Illumina or PacBio
  • At least 2 years of experience applying bioinformatics algorithms to genomic data analysis
  • At least 2 years of experience building scalable bioinformatics infrastructure, including workflow orchestration with Docker, Nextflow, or GitHub Actions
  • At least 2 years of experience applying CLIA, CAP, and HIPAA requirements to clinical genomics applications
  • At least 1 year of full-stack web development experience with Django, Flask, or React
  • At least 3 years of experience with Python, JavaScript, or Java
  • At least 3 years of experience with command-line tools and shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment
  • At least 3 years of experience with SQL and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, or MongoDB
  • At least 1 year of experience with version control, testing, code review, and documentation
  • At least 1 year of experience with production deployment practices and tools such as Docker, CI/CD, and GitHub Actions
  • At least 1 year of experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude
  • At least 1 year of experience with interactive data visualization tools such as Plotly
  • At least 1 year of experience with observability and monitoring platforms such as Grafana, Datadog, or PagerDuty
