Chief Litigation Counsel - Houston, TX (Hybrid)

Lead BMC Software’s global litigation, intellectual property disputes, legal risk, and outside counsel strategy. Advise executive leadership and the board within an enterprise software company.

Description

  • Direct a large global portfolio of complex, high-value intellectual property, commercial, employment, and regulatory matters from initial assessment through resolution
  • Guide internal lawyers, paralegals, international legal staff, and external counsel through delegation, development, and workload planning
  • Shape and carry out litigation strategies that advance BMC’s interests, innovation, and worldwide business priorities
  • Counsel the business on enforcing intellectual property rights and defending infringement allegations across international markets
  • Represent BMC in court proceedings, regulatory matters, and relevant industry forums
  • Manage legal holds, eDiscovery, document review, and defensible information-governance practices
  • Source and oversee external law firms, negotiate engagement terms, and evaluate performance, results, and cost effectiveness
  • Create alternative fee structures and manage legal service providers
  • Control litigation budgets, monitor expenditures, and introduce measures to improve cost efficiency
  • Counsel executives and the board on legal exposure, regulatory changes, and compliance obligations
  • Assess litigation risks connected to mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and other strategic transactions
  • Advance enterprise AI governance by assessing legal and regulatory exposure and creating responsible-use policies, review procedures, and contract provisions
  • Work with Human Resources, Finance, IT, Operations, and other functions to identify and manage legal risks
  • Create and deliver training covering compliance obligations and strategies for reducing risk
  • Upgrade matter management, billing, communications, reporting, and the broader legal technology environment
  • Present legal recommendations to the CEO, executive team, and board
  • Produce recurring litigation reports covering strategy, exposure, reserves, contingencies, and significant developments
  • Coordinate with Finance and auditors to support reliable financial statements and disclosures

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Authorization to practice law in at least one relevant jurisdiction
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible legal experience handling significant litigation in-house or at a major law firm
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and negotiation capabilities
  • High ethical standards and a strong commitment to compliance
  • Strategic judgment with the ability to anticipate legal exposure and address emerging issues globally
  • Collaborative, adaptable approach and the ability to work effectively with senior leaders and cross-functional teams across cultures
  • Preferred: Track record of managing external counsel and legal budgets effectively
  • Preferred: Experience leading legal teams and external counsel across borders
  • Preferred: Background in technology or software, particularly intellectual property protection and enforcement
  • Preferred: Familiarity with international regulatory environments and cross-border disputes
