Backend Software Engineer (Java/Kotlin) – Porto Hybrid

Description

  • Build and maintain backend services and APIs with Java or Kotlin and Spring Boot, or Node.js and TypeScript
  • Develop resilient, scalable services using clean, domain-driven, and event-driven architecture principles
  • Create data models and work with both SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Enable asynchronous service communication through Kafka, NATS, or RabbitMQ
  • Containerize and deploy applications with Docker and Kubernetes while contributing to CI/CD pipelines
  • Develop automated unit, integration, and contract tests and contribute to code reviews
  • Apply AI coding assistants responsibly while retaining ownership of software quality, security, and maintainability
  • Monitor and enhance production systems with emphasis on performance, security, and observability
  • Partner with other teams on technical decisions, shared engineering standards, and knowledge exchange

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • At least three years of professional backend software development experience
  • Practical expertise with Java and/or Kotlin with Spring Boot, or Node.js with TypeScript
  • Working knowledge of RESTful API design and distributed systems
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and with NoSQL databases
  • Familiarity with Kafka, NATS, RabbitMQ, or similar messaging systems
  • Hands-on Docker experience; Kubernetes experience is advantageous
  • Strong testing practices and familiarity with CI/CD workflows
  • Practical experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor, including reviewing and testing generated code critically
  • Experience contributing within agile teams
  • Fluent spoken and written English
