Director of AI Engineering, Capital One (Remote)
Lead responsible AI engineering at Capital One, spanning foundation models, scalable infrastructure, and governed AI products. Shape systems that support innovative customer banking experiences.

- Collaborate with engineering, research, program management, and product teams to deliver AI-powered products.
- Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of AI software components.
- Oversee foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, guardrails, evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
- Guide build-versus-buy decisions involving open-source and SaaS AI technologies.
- Create foundation model optimization methods that improve scalability, cost efficiency, latency, and throughput.
- Help define the technical direction and long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems.
- Recruit, retain, and develop high-performing AI talent.
- Convert enterprise AI strategy into executable portfolio plans.
- Expand AI engineering practices through shared infrastructure, reusable components, and unified governance and observability frameworks.
- Set enterprise Responsible AI standards covering fairness metrics, evaluation protocols, documentation, and audit readiness.
- Work with research, compliance, and enterprise risk partners to address ethical and regulatory standards.

- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, AI, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field with at least 8 years of AI or machine learning development experience, or a relevant master’s degree with at least 6 years of experience.
- At least 3 years of experience leading people.
- At least 5 years of experience managing and directing an engineering team.
- At least 7 years of experience deploying scalable, responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms.
- Experience developing AI and machine learning algorithms or technologies with Python, C++, C#, Java, CUDA, or Golang.
- Experience building agentic AI systems and workflows.
- Experience building and leading multi-team AI organizations delivering several enterprise products or capabilities at the same time.
- Experience implementing long-term AI platform strategies aligned with enterprise priorities and regulatory requirements.
- Experience establishing cross-functional operating rhythms and review cadences, including OKRs, AI governance councils, and quarterly reviews.
- Experience sizing models, instance counts, and hardware types to meet technical requirements.
