Senior DevOps Engineer — Remote in the United Kingdom

Senior DevOps contractor delivering RWS’s AWS-based self-service VM provisioning platform. Establish Terraform, Ansible, GitHub Actions, and Backstage patterns for a secure, reproducible engineering workflow.

Descriere

  • Deliver Phase 1 of the AWS pipeline end to end, from repository setup and Terraform compute modules to Ansible configuration, remote state, validation, and provisioning workflows.
  • Own the Terraform and Ansible architecture, including the transition from infrastructure provisioning to machine configuration.
  • Maintain declarative, reproducible state for every virtual machine.
  • Develop the GitOps workflow in GitHub Actions using OIDC-based, keyless AWS authentication and least-privilege IAM.
  • Implement TTL-based expiry and decommissioning, pull-request-driven resizing, and snapshot and restore capabilities.
  • Publish the pipeline through a Backstage Software Template.
  • Create the JSON schema and documentation needed for the Backstage integration.
  • Mentor and develop the internal DevOps engineer.
  • Lead structured knowledge transfer so the internal team can operate and extend the platform independently.
  • Work with Networking, AD/Identity, Security, and Operations owners to resolve delivery dependencies.

Cerințe

  • Extensive hands-on experience with Terraform for infrastructure as code.
  • Practical Ansible configuration-management experience, including Terraform-to-Ansible handoffs.
  • Demonstrated success building complete provisioning and infrastructure-lifecycle pipelines.
  • Hands-on cloud engineering experience spanning compute, storage, IAM or identity, and networking.
  • AWS experience is preferred; equivalent depth with another hyperscaler is also relevant.
  • Experience defining CI/CD pipelines as code with GitHub Actions and OIDC federation.
  • Experience with GitOps and pull-request-driven delivery workflows.
  • Strong Windows Server and Active Directory expertise.
  • Python experience for validation and engineering tools.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a distributed team.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and transferring operational ownership.
