Product Reliability Engineer, AI Hardware at OpenAI

Improve the reliability of OpenAI’s AI supercomputer hardware. Lead qualification testing, failure analysis, and corrective actions from development through production.

Apraksts

  • Set reliability requirements and targets for PCBAs, trays, systems, and racks.
  • Lead design-for-reliability reviews with electrical, mechanical, and thermal engineering teams.
  • Apply DFMEA, FMEA, and physics-of-failure methods to rank risks and guide design improvements.
  • Own reliability qualification plans from new product introduction through production.
  • Plan and run accelerated-life and environmental tests, including temperature and power cycling, humidity, shock, vibration, and transport testing.
  • Test hardware under representative workloads and monitor its function and degradation during stress.
  • Analyze life-test and field data with Weibull and other reliability models, acceleration models, and confidence intervals.
  • Lead failure investigations from reproducing symptoms to identifying physical root causes.
  • Maintain failure-analysis and corrective-action records; verify fixes through targeted tests and recurrence monitoring.
  • Assess supplier reliability plans and evidence for PCBs, components, cables, connectors, and cooling parts.
  • Coordinate with internal and partner labs to develop test fixtures, instrumentation, and methods.
  • Review sample traceability, test setups, calibration, raw data, and failure capture, including on-site support at manufacturing partners.
  • Establish and validate reliability screens, justified burn-in, and ongoing reliability tests.
  • Assess assembly and integration risks, including board strain, solder-joint damage, connector mating, cable routing, fastener preload, power connections, and thermal interfaces.
  • Work with cooling specialists to assess leak integrity, material compatibility, corrosion, and cooling performance.
  • Plan test resources, lab capacity, hardware samples, schedules, and dependencies across programs.
  • Present qualification results, open failure modes, and residual risks at design and release reviews.
  • Recommend readiness based on evidence, and identify test gaps, follow-up actions, and accountable owners.
  • Assess reliability effects and define targeted requalification for design, component, supplier, manufacturing, repair, and firmware changes.
  • Track field returns and fleet failure trends, connecting telemetry with failure analysis and configuration history.
  • Verify serviceability and repeated assembly or maintenance procedures.
  • Assess how hardware failures, redundancy, and recovery affect rack availability.
