Waterfront Structural Engineering Intern - Seattle, WA

Join Moffatt & Nichol as a structural engineering intern supporting waterfront and marine infrastructure projects in Seattle. Assist with design, calculations, inspections, documentation, and construction support under supervision.

Description

  • Contribute to structural engineering and related technical work across project teams
  • Analyze and design waterfront and marine facilities, including piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, offshore platforms, mooring and berthing dolphins, catwalks, utility supports, drainage structures, retaining walls, towers, and foundations
  • Apply timber, structural steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, aluminum, and composite materials in design work
  • Prepare and support the development of plans, specifications, calculations, and technical reports
  • Investigate and help resolve design issues through site investigations, inspections, detailed design, calculation checks, and coordination
  • Develop construction quantity estimates
  • Work with architects, engineers, scientists, project managers, and other technical disciplines
  • Conduct structural and construction site inspections and document findings in inspection reports
  • Assist with construction administration, including reviewing shop drawings and technical submittals
  • Develop basic drawings, models, calculations, data sets, or code with direct supervision
  • Build proficiency in core tools, standards, and engineering workflows

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis
  • Entering the final year of an eligible bachelor’s program after the summer employment period
  • Master’s degree study is preferred
  • Completed coursework in engineering materials and structural analysis
  • Completed at least one materials design course, such as reinforced concrete or structural steel
  • Working toward an EIT certification or already certified; current certification is preferred
  • Prior related internship experience is preferred but not required
  • Field investigation experience or capability is preferred
  • Experience with AutoCAD, SAP2000, LPile, Mathcad, and Bluebeam is preferred
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Able to successfully complete a pre-employment background check in compliance with NIST 800-171
  • Legally authorized to obtain employment in the United States and provide required hiring documentation
  • Able to travel across unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment during some site visits
