Surgery Coding Auditor - United States Remote

Audit surgical and procedural coding for VA VISN 7 facilities from a remote position in the United States. Assess coding accuracy, documentation, compliance, reimbursement impact, and facility-specific education needs.

Description

  • Independently audit surgical and procedural coding for accuracy, documentation support, compliance, and reimbursement impact
  • Assess ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, modifier, global-package, and Correct Coding Initiative bundling assignments
  • Detect incorrect, missing, unbundled, upcoded, downcoded, unsupported, and otherwise noncompliant codes or modifiers
  • Examine diagnoses and procedures in electronic health records and approved audit tools according to established sampling requirements
  • Record findings with authoritative support, financial impact, risk assessment, and recommended corrective action
  • Maintain at least 95 percent audit accuracy and take part in calibration activities
  • Help develop audit work plans, collection tools, facility reports, consolidated reports, and progress updates
  • Discuss preliminary findings with HIMS leadership, the COR, management, and designated facility personnel
  • Prepare or assist with final reports covering accuracy, documentation concerns, financial impact, process improvement, and educational needs
  • Create and provide facility-specific coding education based on audit findings, including train-the-trainer delivery when assigned
  • Participate in exit conferences and explain coding findings, recommendations, and authoritative guidance
  • Safeguard VA information and comply with privacy, information-security, encryption, and remote-work requirements
  • Complete assigned audit schedules, reporting deadlines, training, credentialing, and access requirements

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English
  • An active RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H credential
  • At least two years of experience in the applicable coding area
  • At least three years of consulting experience reviewing records in large tertiary-care hospitals and outpatient organizations with primary care and subspecialty services
  • At least three years of experience providing education and training
  • Proficiency with ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS Level II, DRG, modifiers, bundling, reimbursement, documentation, and compliance requirements
  • Successful completion of the Low Risk NACI background process
  • Completion of required VA privacy, information-security, and mandatory training
  • Ability to work securely from within the United States
  • Minimum audit accuracy of 95 percent
  • Ability to meet reporting and turnaround requirements
  • Current resume, signed Letter of Intent, and completed candidate cover page
  • Evidence of an active, accepted AHIMA or AAPC credential
  • Two current client references specific to the individual reviewer
  • OIG exclusion search results and requested background, security, identification, privacy, training, or onboarding documents
