Staff Software Engineer, GI (Hybrid — San Francisco)

Lead the 0-to-1 creation of Hinge Health’s AI-powered gastrointestinal care product. Own architecture, experimentation, and scalable digital healthcare delivery while contributing directly to production software.

Description

  • Define the gastrointestinal product line from the ground up
  • Align strategy, experimentation plans, and success metrics with Product, Design, and Marketing
  • Own the technical roadmap spanning AI systems, user interfaces, business-logic middleware, hardware integrations, and clinician workflows
  • Create prototypes and proof-of-concepts for the most complex product challenges
  • Build a minimum lovable gastrointestinal product that delivers measurable health improvements
  • Mentor and pair with engineers on the team
  • Establish engineering practices for CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, and client performance
  • Personally implement the product’s most technically demanding software components
  • Launch the new product and improve it through real member feedback
  • Lead cross-team initiatives that improve the complete gastrointestinal user journey
  • Advance standards for testing, observability, reliability, accessibility, and performance
  • Set technical direction, write production code daily, review code, and shape architecture without taking on people management
  • Work with senior leaders and Product, Design, and Marketing teams across San Francisco, Montreal, and Bangalore

Requirements

  • At least four years of practical software engineering experience, including shipping user-facing production applications
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent foreign qualification
  • At least two years of hands-on React Native experience building mobile applications at scale
  • A track record of creating and launching new products from the ground up
  • Experience applying current AI software development methods, including teams of AI agents
  • Full-stack experience with React Native, BFF/web applications, GraphQL, AI agents, computer vision, and medical-device integrations
  • Experience running A/B or multivariate experiments and using findings to guide roadmap decisions
  • Strong command of TypeScript, JavaScript, React Native, and modern mobile development tools
  • Familiarity with Node.js/TypeScript backend services and GraphQL
  • Experience with large React Native codebases, TypeScript/Node.js and Go backends, GraphQL, AWS, client-performance tooling, render optimization, DevOps, and application architecture patterns
  • Experience integrating product experiences across platforms maintained by different teams
  • Ability to mentor and develop engineers through code reviews, design collaboration, and technical guidance
  • Experience partnering with product, design, and data or analytics teams to establish metrics and interpret results
  • Experience developing consumer applications used by millions or billions of people
  • Experience working in healthcare, HIPAA-covered environments, or other highly regulated domains handling sensitive member data
  • Willingness to work from the San Francisco office three days per week for a full eight-hour business day
  • Based in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area
