Staff Backend Engineer at bsport (Spain Hybrid)
Lead backend architecture and engineering standards for bsport’s boutique fitness management platform. Shape scalable systems, mentor engineers, improve reliability, and advance AI-assisted development practices.
Description
- Set technical direction and architecture across the team and broader engineering organisation
- Build scalable services, distributed systems, and shared engineering capabilities
- Take complex cross-team technical challenges from definition through delivery
- Make practical decisions involving data models, APIs, networking, and infrastructure
- Define architectural patterns, standards, and development practices for multiple teams
- Balance immediate product priorities with sustainable long-term technology decisions
- Strengthen engineering quality through reviews, design sessions, documentation, and hands-on work
- Influence outcomes while partnering with Backend, Data, Product, DevOps, and engineering leaders
- Coach and support engineers across teams
- Advance system reliability and observability
- Help evolve the engineering stack, including Python, Django, PostgreSQL, AWS, messaging, and modern data and infrastructure tools
- Develop and review production-ready code
- Explore AI-supported engineering workflows to help bsport become AI-native
Requirements
- Substantial backend engineering experience, especially with Python
- Experience with Django is advantageous
- Proven ability to design and evolve distributed systems at scale for millions of users or comparably complex workloads
- Confidence evaluating technical choices across data modelling, service boundaries, APIs, networking, and infrastructure
- Experience leading technical programmes across teams without relying on formal authority
- Solid grasp of architecture, domain boundaries, data ownership, and organisational interfaces
- A pragmatic approach to trade-offs, using domain-driven design and interface purity as means rather than ends
- Ability to take ownership of unclear problems and contribute to product and design decisions
- Motivation to mentor engineers and raise standards beyond your immediate team
- Professional fluency in English
- Interest in creating organisation-wide technical impact and shaping engineering evolution
- Awareness of the potential and risks of AI-assisted workflows
