Staff Accountant - Berkeley Hybrid | FAR.AI

Own full-cycle accounting at FAR.AI, a nonprofit AI safety research institute. Help build scalable financial systems as the organization expands across entities and geographies.

Description

  • Manage the full accounting cycle
  • Lead month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
  • Maintain accurate general ledger records for a U.S. nonprofit with international operations and a Singapore entity
  • Support grant and fund accounting by tracking restricted and unrestricted funds, preparing grant reports, and meeting donor requirements
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reporting for leadership and the board
  • Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, and tax preparers
  • Work with the Head of Finance and Finance Manager to develop and document accounting policies, internal controls, and scalable processes
  • Provide additional support for financial operations as needed
  • Handle ad hoc financial analysis and reporting requests from program teams, leadership, and external stakeholders
  • Help expand internal accounting capacity as FAR.AI grows to roughly three times its current size and enters new geographies and entities

Requirements

  • At least five years of hands-on accounting experience with ownership of full-cycle accounting
  • CPA license or active progress toward CPA certification
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and financial systems, including Google Sheets, QuickBooks Online, Ramp, Mercury, and Airtable
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with a systematic approach to reconciliation and documentation
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, grant reporting, and Form 990 preparation is a plus
  • Familiarity with multi-entity or multi-currency accounting is a plus
  • Experience supporting or coordinating external audits is a plus
  • Experience developing or improving financial controls is a plus
  • Experience implementing or improving financial systems is a plus
  • Experience working in a startup-like environment is a plus
