Senior Software Engineering Manager - Remote in the United States

Lead high-performing software engineering teams at Mercury Insurance while shaping technical strategy, roadmap delivery, and secure, scalable applications for insurance products.

Description

  • Build and lead high-performing software engineering teams
  • Recruit, mentor, and motivate engineering staff
  • Own budgeting and planning for the assigned area
  • Partner with product managers to estimate work, prioritize roadmaps, plan initiatives, and deliver roadmap commitments
  • Convert product requirements into robust, modular, configurable, reusable, secure, compliant, scalable, maintainable, performant, and user-friendly designs
  • Provide hands-on leadership to deliver features and remove delivery blockers
  • Coordinate with engineering teams and stakeholders to support successful delivery
  • Review requirements, designs, and code for quality and alignment with engineering best practices
  • Keep application systems secure, compliant, performant, and current
  • Find opportunities to improve systems and processes
  • Lead feature development, major refactors or migrations, and process improvements
  • Use CI/CD and process optimization to accelerate time to market
  • Monitor industry developments and promote adoption of engineering best practices
  • Help shape Mercury’s technical vision, strategy, and innovation for application systems

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 10 years of software engineering experience, including 5 or more years managing staff
  • Experience leading customer-facing digital experiences across multiple surfaces or channels
  • Strong full-stack product engineering experience
  • Experience using existing backend APIs and defining frontend-to-platform contracts
  • Experience creating reusable frameworks or components
  • Insurance industry experience is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to establish engineering best practices, operational excellence, and organizational discipline across teams
  • Proven ability to build and manage large, high-performing software engineering organizations
  • Experience hiring and developing future managers and engineering leaders
  • Proficiency in project management, including estimation, planning, execution, tracking, and progress reporting
  • Experience leading engineering teams across mobile, web, backend, data, and other technology stacks
  • Experience designing and implementing distributed application systems
  • Proficiency with APIs, messaging, data streaming, workflow and integration frameworks, microservices, containers, and cloud computing
  • Experience maximizing the value of open-source libraries
  • Experience applying DevSecOps practices
  • Experience using analytics data and experimentation
  • Experience leading transformative initiatives such as digital transformation, omnichannel delivery, legacy migration, cloud transformation, modernization, product development, and AI/ML adoption
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong ability to collaborate with and influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders
  • Experience driving operational excellence, quality, performance, scalability, maintainability, and observability
  • Experience setting technical strategy, vision, and innovation
  • A master’s degree in computer science is preferred
  • Experience developing software for P&C insurance is preferred
