Senior Machine Learning Engineer, eCommerce Search and Discovery | Walmart | Sunnyvale, CA

Build scalable machine learning systems for Walmart’s eCommerce search and discovery experience. Develop ranking, retrieval, natural language processing, and low-latency services that support millions of daily queries.

Description

  • Lead the design, development, and deployment of scalable machine learning solutions for complex business problems
  • Partner with engineering, data science, and product teams to deliver models and ML features that support business goals
  • Create and deploy scalable ML systems with suitable algorithms, frameworks, and programming languages
  • Build and maintain data pipelines, APIs, and model components that meet quality, security, and compliance standards
  • Use MLOps practices such as CI/CD, model versioning, monitoring, and automated retraining
  • Evaluate and validate models while monitoring their ongoing performance
  • Coach team members on engineering practices, code quality, and model evaluation
  • Contribute to architecture decisions that strengthen system scalability and maintainability
  • Develop and optimize high-throughput, low-latency services using distributed systems, fault tolerance, and concurrency techniques
  • Conduct A/B tests to measure search quality and business outcomes
  • Support eCommerce search and discovery capabilities, including query and intent understanding, autocomplete, retrieval, ranking, and data and feature pipelines
  • Advance continuous improvement, technical quality, innovation, and operational resilience

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related field plus 3 years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems, or a related area; alternatively, 5 years of relevant experience
  • Advanced experience designing, developing, and deploying scalable machine learning models with TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn
  • Strong programming ability in Python, SQL, Java, C++, or R
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clean, production-ready code
  • Experience with MLOps, including CI/CD pipelines, model versioning, automated retraining, and performance and drift monitoring
  • Experience with hyperparameter tuning, model evaluation, and feature engineering
  • Knowledge of secure, compliant AI engineering and data pipeline development
  • Familiarity with large language models and GPU optimization techniques
  • Ability to work across functions and mentor junior engineers
  • Preferred: master’s degree and one year of experience in a related area
  • Preferred: professional experience with accessibility best practices
  • Preferred: experience creating inclusive digital experiences and applying WCAG 2.2 AA standards and assistive technologies
