Senior Full-Stack Engineer — United States Remote

Build PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Python, React, and GIS solutions for Peraton’s USGS Volcano Hazards Program. Contribute to monitoring, visualization, reporting, security, accessibility, and cloud-ready system delivery.

Description

  • Design, develop, document, and deploy cloud-ready databases and visualization tools for the U.S. Geological Survey Volcano Hazards Program
  • Review government-provided monitoring and evaluation plans alongside existing VDAP database code
  • Build PostgreSQL/PostGIS databases with stored procedures, views, validation logic, and data dictionaries
  • Design database systems that support mobile-device access
  • Develop Python REST APIs with FastAPI or Flask
  • Create data-ingestion tools and ETL workflows
  • Implement metadata management consistent with USGS standards
  • Perform backend unit and integration testing
  • Build responsive data-entry and reporting interfaces with JavaScript/TypeScript and React
  • Develop an editable content-management tool for VHP staff
  • Create interactive dashboards with filtering, drill-down, and export functionality
  • Develop GIS tools for spatial volcano-data visualization
  • Implement interactive web maps with the ESRI JavaScript API, Leaflet, or Mapbox
  • Connect geospatial layers to database backends through REST APIs
  • Use ArcGIS, ArcPy, GDAL/OGR, and PostGIS spatial capabilities
  • Design portable, maintainable, cloud-ready systems that meet USGS architecture and security baselines
  • Document deployment configurations to support future CHS cloud and hybrid-environment migrations
  • Maintain user guides, data dictionaries, API references, system schemas, and deployment documentation
  • Complete DOI security-awareness training and follow FISMA, NIST, and DOI security requirements
  • Support Certification and Accreditation activities and approved logon-banner requirements
  • Assess interfaces against WCAG 2.0 Levels A and AA and correct non-compliant features
  • Join weekly meetings with VHP staff and the volcano-hazards software development team
  • Submit written updates on completed work, planned activities, issues, and risks
  • Incorporate input from the VHP Coordinator and COR
  • Coordinate with teams at all five U.S. volcano observatories to preserve system interoperability
  • Travel to Natural Hazards Mission Area offices for onboarding, integration meetings, or collaborative sessions

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of professional experience, master’s degree with 6 years, associate’s degree with 10 years, or high school diploma/equivalent with 12 years
  • U.S. citizenship is required
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Public Trust clearance
  • All work must be performed within the United States
  • Experience designing, implementing, and optimizing PostgreSQL/PostGIS relational databases with spatial types, indexes, and complex queries
  • Proficiency developing REST APIs with FastAPI or Flask
  • Experience with data ingestion, ETL processes, and automation scripting
  • Strong modern JavaScript front-end development skills
  • Ability to create responsive, accessible, interactive applications with JavaScript/TypeScript and React
  • Hands-on experience with ArcGIS, ArcPy, GDAL/OGR, PostGIS, and ESRI JavaScript API, Leaflet, or Mapbox
  • Experience designing, documenting, and consuming secure, versioned, well-documented REST APIs
  • Ability to create logical and physical data models, entity-relationship diagrams, and federal-standard data dictionaries
  • Experience designing portable, maintainable systems for cloud or hybrid environments
  • Familiarity with containers and cloud-native architecture patterns
  • Proficiency with Git workflows, including branching, merging, code review, and repository administration
  • Working knowledge of Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 Levels A and AA
  • Experience implementing semantic HTML, ARIA, keyboard navigation, and color-contrast compliance
  • Familiarity with FISMA, NIST SP 800-53, and federal Certification and Accreditation processes
  • Ability to write complete technical documentation, including user guides, API references, schemas, and deployment guides
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Experience collaborating in cross-functional teams with government stakeholders
  • Ability to deliver clear status reports and incorporate iterative feedback
  • Ability to travel for up to three on-site visits during the 12-month period of performance

Benefits

  • Base salary range of $104,000 to $166,000
