Senior Android Developer – California Remote

Description

  • Create and maintain Android applications for swarm planning, monitoring, and tactical control
  • Add GIS layers and DTED elevation data to map-based mission-planning interfaces
  • Develop real-time telemetry, command, and control using UDP, TCP, WebSockets, MQTT, or comparable transports
  • Enable mesh-radio and cellular connectivity in constrained tactical settings
  • Partner with backend, autonomy, and field engineering teams
  • Deliver operator-facing features and support field exercises and customer demonstrations
  • Use field feedback to inform product roadmap decisions
  • Travel as needed for field testing and demonstrations

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional Android development experience, mainly with Kotlin; Java experience may be secondary
  • Advanced knowledge of Jetpack components, coroutines, and lifecycle-aware architecture
  • Practical experience integrating and displaying mobile GIS data, including map tiles, vector overlays, WGS84, MGRS, and UTM
  • Experience using DTED data for line-of-sight, terrain-following, or viewshed functionality
  • Working familiarity with osmdroid, MapLibre, Mapbox, or the Google Maps SDK
  • Understanding of georeferenced rasters, map projections, and coordinate transformations
  • Experience building low-latency Android data pipelines with sockets, WebSockets, MQTT, gRPC, or Protobuf
  • Strong multithreading and offline-first application design capabilities
  • Experience designing rugged-device interfaces for sunlight, gloved use, and unreliable network conditions
  • Able to work independently and across functions with limited supervision
  • Able to stay composed in operationally demanding situations
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is desired
  • U.S. security clearance or eligibility to obtain one is desired
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required for ITAR/EAR-restricted work
  • Must not require sponsorship for export-restricted work authorization
  • Successful completion of a background check after an offer
  • Able to walk, stand, and move through large indoor and outdoor facilities for extended periods
  • Able to regularly lift, carry, and move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Personal protective equipment may be required in designated areas
  • May be required to climb ladders, stoop, kneel, or crouch
  • Occasional work outside normal hours or on weekends may be required
  • Travel of up to 25% may be required
