Principal Engineer, TeraWave RF and Optical Systems — Blue Origin Onsite

Lead end-to-end integration, verification, and test automation for Blue Origin’s TeraWave satellite communications network. Drive constellation-scale bring-up, link validation, and flight operations across RF and optical systems.

Description

  • Lead integration, bring-up, and verification for TeraWave RF and optical payloads, user and gateway terminals, and ground systems
  • Establish verification direction for space-based RF and optical links while advising leadership and customers on advanced technical studies
  • Own integration and verification architecture, automation frameworks, strategy, and requirements traceability
  • Perform trade studies, develop prototypes, and assess early technical feasibility
  • Create and deploy agentic AI systems for automated validation, data collection, analysis, troubleshooting, optimization, and test execution
  • Coordinate integration campaigns across hardware, silicon, RF and antenna, optical, modem and DSP, flight software, SDN, networking, and systems engineering
  • Direct satellite and terminal bring-up, including RF alignment, optical alignment, timing, power, thermal, networking, and antenna integration
  • Lead verification of RF payloads, optical links, PHY, MAC, and network layers
  • Develop high-fidelity hardware-in-the-loop environments that reproduce orbital dynamics with ranges, channel emulators, GNSS simulators, hexapods, positioners, and precision instruments
  • Model constellation geometry, antenna projections, and SINR changes to validate achievable data rates
  • Improve verification lifecycle processes, CI/CD pipelines, test-vector generation, instrument abstraction, automated data reduction, and analysis
  • Deliver production-quality Python, C/C++, and MATLAB/Simulink code and establish performance KPIs
  • Create long-term roadmaps for laboratory, chamber, and ground-station infrastructure, covering capital plans, suppliers, procurement, and deployment
  • Lead anomaly investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective and preventive actions
  • Support on-orbit commissioning and flight operations through test-as-you-fly validation and operational handoff
  • Mentor engineers, provide technical leadership, lead design reviews, and set engineering direction
  • Manage schedules, budgets, milestones, and risks for assigned systems and projects
  • Maintain partnerships with internal teams, external collaborators, suppliers, and standards organizations
  • Own technical records including verification reports, ICDs, test plans, procedures, and release criteria
  • Advance industry expertise through inventions, publications, and participation in technical committees

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or a related discipline
  • At least seven years of experience integrating, testing, and verifying RF and/or optical communications systems spanning complex hardware and software
  • Proven ownership of complete integration and verification lifecycles, from requirements and ConOps through design, simulation, laboratory or chamber testing, hardware-in-the-loop emulation, and field or on-orbit validation
  • Extensive hands-on experience with RF test and reference equipment such as signal generators and analyzers, VNAs, oscilloscopes, channel emulators, noise and power meters, and phase-noise analyzers
  • Experience with anechoic chamber, CATR, or OTA testing methods
  • Strong understanding of link budgets and modem or PHY performance measures, including EVM, ACLR, PAPR, sensitivity, BER/BLER, MCS/FEC behavior, CFO/SFO, and timing recovery
  • Proficiency building test automation and analysis software with Python and MATLAB/Simulink
  • Working knowledge of C/C++ and Linux-based testing and networking environments
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams and mentoring senior engineers
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • U.S. citizenship or nationality, permanent resident status, current Green Card status, or lawful admission as a refugee or asylee is required
  • A related master’s degree or PhD is preferred
  • Ten or more years of experience verifying mission-critical communications systems is preferred
  • Preferred experience includes software-defined radios, RF transceivers, antenna control, optical transceivers, free-space optical or laser communications terminals, satellite communications, LEO mega-constellations, NTN, cellular wireless, or terrestrial telecommunications
  • Preferred background includes HITL or digital-twin frameworks, GNSS simulators, hexapods, positioners, precision timing, 3GPP NTN, Release 17+ callbox or UE emulation, DU/CU evaluation, hosted-payload integration, test infrastructure, formal verification, radiation-hardened computing, spectrum or regulatory compliance, publications, patents, or standards participation
  • Completion of Blue’s Standard Background Check is required; some roles may require additional checks or credentials
