Mid-to-Senior Structural Designer - Detroit, Onsite

Amentum is seeking a mid-to-senior Structural Designer to create 2D drawings and 3D models for complex aerospace, automotive, defense, and research test facilities. The role includes leading drafting teams and coordinating structural project delivery.

Description

  • Create 2D structural drawings and 3D models for complex facilities
  • Lead structural projects as part of multidisciplinary teams
  • Produce custom designs that meet client requirements while keeping drafting work on schedule and within budget
  • Resolve drafting and design issues or coordinate solutions with engineering and management
  • Create procedures that improve drafting workflows
  • Support less experienced drafters as they build their technical skills
  • Lead drafting teams on major or complex projects and provide specialist support for design, drafting, and CAD activities
  • Assemble complete drawing packages for large projects and conduct drawing checks
  • Guide designers and drafters technically, prepare work plans, recommend assignments, review work, and coordinate with project management
  • Carry out creative design, basic and independent engineering analysis, liaison activities, and field monitoring
  • Complete complex drafting work from calculations and sketches
  • Assess design feasibility and compliance with specifications
  • Check drawings for accuracy and suitability, direct corrections, and confirm final package completeness
  • Prepare sketches, uphold drafting standards, recommend updates, and support training plans
  • Operate CAD systems and train employees in their use
  • Travel to project sites and customer meetings when required

Requirements

  • Must be a US citizen because most projects support government clients
  • Bring 10–20 years of experience creating 2D drawings and 3D structural models; candidates with 20 years may be considered when otherwise well matched
  • Have two years of vocational training or college coursework in drafting or engineering principles, plus at least eight years of experience
  • Relevant additional education may replace part of the required progressive experience
  • Have working knowledge of CAE and CAD systems
  • Demonstrate leadership, organization, planning, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Be able to lead a small team of structural designers and drafters
  • Use one or more of AutoCAD, Advance Steel, Inventor, Revit, or Creo to produce 2D drawings and 3D models
  • Pass pre-employment drug screening and background checks
  • Be able to sit at a desk and use a computer for extended periods
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Be prepared for occasional site visits and travel involving lifting, climbing, crawling, and the use of specialized clothing, equipment, or PPE
