Queue
Queue
Queue is a healthcare and pharmaceutical technology startup developing autonomous robotic pharmacy systems. Its kiosk-style units accept sealed wholesale medication bottles and dispense verified prescription vials with minimal human intervention, combining computer vision for pill identification, QR-code prescription verification, and AI-assisted inventory monitoring. Each unit is designed to stock roughly 250–280 commonly prescribed medications based on local demand and can fill a 60-pill vial in about 30 seconds. Queue is building pharmacy infrastructure intended to improve dispensing efficiency, reduce costs, and expand access in underserved areas. The company emerged from stealth following a seed round led by AlleyCorp and operates with a Silicon Valley team of around 20.

Lead Systems Engineer - Autonomous Pharmacy

Lead systems engineering for Queue’s autonomous robotic pharmacy, defining architecture, safety, and regulatory strategy. Connect hardware, software, autonomy, and operations to support reliable medication dispensing at scale.

Description

  • Establish company-wide systems engineering processes, standards, tools, and review practices
  • Direct key architectural decisions covering margins, safety, and quality
  • Coordinate hardware, software, autonomy, operations, and pharmacy functions
  • Develop systems-thinking capabilities through cross-disciplinary engineering mentorship
  • Shape the product roadmap and strategy with executive leadership
  • Own the system safety strategy for a fully autonomous pharmacy
  • Use SOTIF methods to address performance limitations, edge cases, and unknown unsafe conditions
  • Lead hazard analyses across perception, dispensing verification, software, and human interaction
  • Define safety metrics, acceptance thresholds, and residual-risk justifications
  • Develop safety evidence from simulations, tests, and field data
  • Create safety monitoring and incident-learning processes as the fleet expands
  • Lead regulatory strategy involving state Boards of Pharmacy and applicable federal authorities
  • Convert regulatory objectives into system requirements and testable evidence
  • Present Queue’s engineering case to regulators, pharmacy partners, and standards organizations
  • Contribute to emerging regulatory frameworks for pharmacy automation
  • Own system requirements, interfaces, and performance, reliability, and safety budgets
  • Maintain system-level models for throughput, reliability, safety, and cost
  • Lead quantitative trade studies and resolve uncertainty through first-principles analysis
  • Design systems for scale, serviceability, and dependable field operation
  • Report to the Head of Systems Engineering while operating with substantial autonomy and influence

Requirements

  • Bring 8–12+ years of engineering experience on complex, safety-critical products, including senior technical leadership in systems architecture or safety
  • Have shipped systems with significant safety, operational, and economic consequences
  • Robotics experience is not mandatory; relevant backgrounds include autonomous vehicles, aerospace, medical devices, and industrial automation
  • Demonstrate advanced systems-safety expertise for autonomous or software-intensive products, including SOTIF (ISO 21448) and STPA, FMEA, or FTA hazard analysis
  • Have developed and defended safety cases or comparable risk arguments with external stakeholders
  • Bring deep expertise in systems architecture, requirements, interfaces, and engineering trade-offs
  • Work effectively across hardware, software, and operations, with depth in autonomy or perception, embedded or distributed software, electronics, or mechatronics
  • Set technical direction and influence teams and leaders without relying on formal authority
  • Apply first-principles reasoning, use data to make decisions, and take ownership in uncertain situations with low ego
  • Know autonomy and functional-safety standards such as UL 4600, ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or ISO 10218
  • Know medical-device or aerospace safety frameworks such as ISO 14971, IEC 62304, ARP4754A, or ARP4761
  • Have engaged regulators including state agencies, NHTSA, FAA, FDA, DEA, or Boards of Pharmacy
  • Have helped develop standards, policy, or regulation for emerging technologies
  • Have built an engineering function or operating processes at an early-stage company
