Waterfront Structural Engineering Intern - Seattle

Support Moffatt & Nichol’s waterfront infrastructure projects through marine-structure design, calculations, drawings, inspections, and reporting. Work under supervision while developing practical structural engineering experience.

Description

  • Analyze and design waterfront structures, including supporting inspection activities
  • Perform structural analysis and design for marine facilities such as piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, offshore platforms, mooring and berthing dolphins, catwalks, utility supports, drainage structures, retaining walls, towers, and foundations
  • Apply timber, structural steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, aluminum, and composite materials in design work
  • Assist in preparing plans, specifications, engineering calculations, and technical reports
  • Help address design issues through field investigations, inspections, detailed design, computation checks, and coordination of design elements
  • Prepare construction quantity estimates
  • Work with architects, engineers, scientists, and project managers on multidisciplinary assignments
  • Conduct structural and construction site inspections and document findings in inspection reports
  • Assist with office-based construction administration, including shop drawing and technical submittal reviews
  • Develop basic drawings, models, calculations, data sets, or code under direct supervision

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in structural engineering or civil engineering with a structural emphasis
  • Entering the final year of an eligible bachelor’s degree program after the summer employment period
  • Current master’s degree students are preferred
  • Completed coursework in engineering materials and structural analysis
  • Completed at least one materials design course, such as reinforced concrete or structural steel
  • Working toward an EIT certification or already holding one, preferably
  • Previous related internship experience is preferred but not required
  • Ability to conduct field investigations is preferred
  • Preferred familiarity with AutoCAD, SAP2000, LPile, Mathcad, and Bluebeam
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Able to successfully complete a post-offer pre-employment background check compliant with NIST 800-171
  • Legally eligible to obtain employment in the United States and provide required hiring documentation
