Visa Staff Backend Software Engineer - Warsaw Hybrid

Lead the design and development of secure, scalable backend systems for Visa’s global payments technology. Shape architecture, write production code, improve reliability, and support incident response.

Description

  • Partner with stakeholders to define product component requirements and incorporate feedback into designs and solutions
  • Convert functional requirements into system designs and document component interactions
  • Design and build product components, refine implementation plans, and lead design reviews
  • Support project estimation and escalate risks that could affect delivery timelines
  • Develop and maintain extensible, reusable code
  • Improve code quality through engineering metrics and established best practices
  • Use debugging tools to investigate and resolve moderately complex software issues
  • Find opportunities to automate processes across products
  • Lead code reviews and give actionable feedback to colleagues
  • Develop comprehensive test plans, identify coverage gaps, and resolve defects
  • Use data analysis and monitoring practices to detect patterns and identify defects
  • Participate in on-call rotations and help investigate and resolve incidents
  • Build, improve, and evaluate developer tools for programs and applications
  • Expand technical knowledge and adapt to evolving technologies and engineering approaches
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, data scientists, QA, operations, and compliance teams to deliver secure, scalable solutions
  • Spend approximately 60–75% of working time writing code
  • Use emerging technologies, including generative AI tools, in day-to-day engineering work

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree, 2 years with an advanced degree, 0 years with a PhD, or 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Professional experience in software engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Experience designing, developing, and operating backend systems with Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and microservices
  • Experience designing and running highly available, scalable, secure cloud-native applications on AWS
  • Experience architecting distributed systems for resilience, fault tolerance, and performance
  • Experience with Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, and modern GitOps deployment practices
  • Experience implementing observability through monitoring, logging, tracing, and alerting
  • Experience developing or implementing web-based or mobile applications
  • Experience leading technical work, with or without direct reports
  • Ability to debug and troubleshoot software problems
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to deliver technical solutions
  • Experience conducting code reviews and applying coding standards
  • Experience using GenAI or LLM-based tools and techniques in software engineering workflows
  • Experience with container-based technologies
  • Experience building and testing enterprise-scale web services
  • Experience contributing to product development
  • Experience working on client-facing projects or technical teams
  • Experience with payments, acceptance devices, or point-of-sale platforms
  • Experience integrating GenAI or LLM capabilities into production backend systems
