Upstream Petroleum Legal Analyst

Research African oil and gas regulation for S&P Global Energy, covering legal, fiscal, and commercial developments. Provide clear insights on regulatory risk to clients, market participants, and policymakers.

Description

  • Monitor and interpret African upstream oil and gas developments across legal, regulatory, contractual, commercial, and economic areas.
  • Evaluate the potential effects of contractual, regulatory, and fiscal changes on upstream operations and investment.
  • Present regulatory-risk analysis to clients and market participants through briefings and strategic discussions.
  • Maintain regulatory-monitoring resources and support consistent, evidence-based risk evaluations.
  • Work with colleagues across disciplines and regions to deliver integrated research on major African oil and gas trends.
  • Build specialist expertise and deliver practical legal and commercial analysis for clients and policymakers.

Requirements

  • Relevant legal or project-economics training or experience in energy, petroleum, mining, taxation, or a related legal field.
  • Several years of experience in upstream petroleum analysis, energy regulation, or commercial energy research.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and interpret legal or regulatory frameworks and explain findings clearly.
  • Strong analytical skills for converting qualitative and quantitative information into practical insights.
  • Effective written and verbal English communication skills, including presenting to internal or external audiences.
  • French and/or Portuguese language skills are preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience assessing legal, regulatory, commercial, or policy developments in energy or another regulated sector is preferred.
  • Familiarity with African markets is welcomed.
  • Knowledge of petroleum economics, energy policy, regulation, or taxation.
  • Interest in or experience with responsible use of AI-enabled tools and emerging research methods.
  • Experience working across regions, disciplines, or cultural environments.
