Summer Software Verification Engineer Intern – AV/AI Platform at General Motors

General Motors seeks a summer intern to verify autonomous-vehicle hardware and software across AV/AI platforms. The role uses Python automation and evaluates results from HIL, SIL, bench, simulation, and fleet testing.

Description

  • Perform functional bring-up and system integration on subsystem and full-system test benches
  • Assess interactions among compute platforms, ECUs, sensors, and vehicle software
  • Run functional, performance, and validation tests across simulation, HIL, SIL, benches, and on-road fleets
  • Build Python automation and supporting tools that increase test efficiency and shorten development cycles
  • Review test data, record outcomes, consolidate findings, and assist with root-cause analysis
  • Help develop datasets, scenario libraries, and automated pipelines for HIL and SIL testing
  • Define technical problem statements, develop practical solutions, and consider tradeoffs and edge cases
  • Contribute to technical discussions, test plans, design reviews, and cross-functional problem-solving
  • Partner with software, hardware, systems, safety, and vehicle engineering teams on system integration
  • Present test outcomes, technical conclusions, and recommendations clearly to diverse stakeholders

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled full time in a degree program leading to a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related STEM discipline
  • Expected to graduate between December 2027 and August 2029, with at least one additional academic quarter or semester remaining after the internship
  • Programming experience in C++, Python, or another object-oriented language
  • Demonstrated interest in hardware, embedded systems, system integration, automated testing, or a related area
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication abilities
  • Comfort working across software, hardware, systems, test, and safety teams
  • Available to work 40 hours per week during the 12-week summer internship, from May 24 through August 13 or June 14 through September 3, 2027
  • Preferred: software engineering experience gained through an internship, job, coding competition, student engineering team or competition, research, coursework, or personal project
  • Preferred: practical experience building, testing, debugging, or integrating hardware and software systems
  • Preferred: familiarity with CAN, LIN, or Ethernet protocols
  • Preferred: coursework or project work with Python, C/C++, embedded microcontrollers, or test automation
  • Preferred: basic knowledge of embedded Linux, real-time systems, ECUs, sensors, or vehicle networks
  • Preferred: experience with simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, test benches, or automated validation pipelines
  • Preferred: experience interpreting test data and presenting technical findings or root-cause analyses
  • Preferred: familiarity with autonomous-vehicle sensors, including cameras, lidar, radar, or IMUs
  • Preferred: enthusiasm for self-driving technology and its potential impact
