Staff Software Engineer, Web Application Services — Canada Remote

Lead scalable web services for Thunderbird, Mozilla’s open-source, privacy-focused email and productivity platform. Shape architecture, prototypes, analytics, and technical strategy across engineering and product work.

Description

  • Own the architecture for new Services products and lead complex initiatives
  • Develop software, prototypes, and experiments across planning, testing, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance
  • Define engineering patterns, make technical decisions, and recommend suitable technologies
  • Develop analytics and infrastructure that use user-generated data to inform decisions
  • Address ambiguous, high-impact challenges in support of Services objectives, users, and subscribers
  • Set technical and product direction for Thunderbird while working with Mozilla and open-source contributors
  • Collaborate with the team and community to identify issues, improve concepts, and create workable solutions
  • Design system and process improvements that increase accessibility, self-service, sustainability, scalability, and delegation
  • Support engineers through reviews, documentation, technical dialogue, process refinement, and mentoring
  • Keep pace with evolving technologies, coding practices, libraries, and frameworks
  • Advance reusable software patterns and scalable architecture throughout Web Services products
  • Work with leaders and cross-functional partners to guide data-informed product decisions

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of web software development experience, including scalable system design and launching complex web projects
  • Advanced JavaScript expertise plus proficiency in another language such as Python, Rust, Go, or C++
  • Business awareness and experience partnering with teams to grow Thunderbird’s user and donor base
  • Background in front-end frameworks, full-stack engineering, and/or API development
  • Strong command of testing, code review, documentation, and other software development practices
  • Experience serving as a technical lead, resolving difficult engineering problems, and mentoring other developers
  • Experience working remotely with engineering, product, QA, and design stakeholders
  • Excellent written and spoken English, including technical documentation skills
  • Comfort contributing in an open-source setting and alignment with Mozilla’s values
  • Ability to assess and adopt emerging technologies responsibly, including AI-enabled tools
  • Dedication to ongoing learning and staying informed about industry developments
  • Availability and willingness to travel periodically, including internationally
  • Product management or product-oriented experience is a plus
