Staff Backend Software Engineer, Identity Decisioning — Canada Remote

Lead backend strategy and development for Affirm’s international identity platform, supporting KYC, user lifecycle management, and identity decisioning. Own architecture, reliability, operations, and engineering standards at staff level.

Description

  • Set the team’s technical direction over a year-long planning horizon
  • Translate technical strategy into high-impact business initiatives
  • Partner with product, design, and analytics across the product development lifecycle
  • Define, promote, and improve technical solutions and operational practices
  • Own team operations and service availability, including monitoring, triage, playbooks, policies, testing, alerting, and on-call work
  • Set expectations for code reviews and system design
  • Promote engineering standards through technical writing and presentations
  • Grow team capability through feedback, coaching, and role modeling
  • Develop and operate Identity systems for KYC, user lifecycle management, and identity decisioning across international markets

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience designing, building, and launching backend systems at scale
  • Professional experience with Python or Kotlin
  • Deep experience building highly available distributed systems
  • Experience with AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes
  • Experience delivering major features or system components, or retiring existing functionality, through technical and execution plans
  • Ability to produce high-quality, maintainable code
  • Ability to work across low-level language details and large-scale system architecture
  • Track record of actively gathering and incorporating feedback
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Equivalent practical experience or a bachelor’s degree in a related field; candidates must reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.
