Software Developer, WEAP Platform (Hybrid)

SEI seeks a software developer/scientist to advance the WEAP platform for integrated water-resources planning. The role combines scientific software, AI-assisted modeling tools, and cloud-enabled workflows for users worldwide.

Description

  • Co-lead the WEAP platform’s full development lifecycle, from architecture and implementation through testing, documentation, and release
  • Build modeling tools, interfaces, APIs, data-processing workflows, and analytical capabilities
  • Develop and assess AI-assisted features for building, troubleshooting, documenting, interpreting, and analyzing WEAP models
  • Partner with researchers and modelers to convert scientific and policy requirements into dependable software
  • Support the integration of hydrologic, climate, economic, geospatial, and environmental data into modeling workflows
  • Engage with and help expand the international WEAP user community through technical collaboration and problem solving
  • Oversee the security, integrity, and responsible stewardship of WEAP software and digital assets
  • Use secure development practices, remediate vulnerabilities, manage access and dependencies, and assess third-party technologies and services
  • Explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Maintain and improve the WEAP website and online user resources
  • Help move the platform toward cloud-based services

Requirements

  • Demonstrated software engineering and programming expertise, including work on substantial, long-lived codebases
  • Experience developing desktop applications end to end, including architecture, UI design, implementation, testing, documentation, and release
  • Practical judgment and interest in using AI-assisted development tools and workflows
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to manage risks involving software architecture, data handling, access controls, third-party dependencies, licensing, source code, and digital assets
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organization and time management, with the ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and international teams
  • Interest in sustainability, water resources, and environmental systems
  • Highly preferred: Delphi/Object Pascal or substantial experience with compiled, statically typed languages such as C# or C++
  • Experience developing native Windows applications
  • Background in scientific or numerical computing
  • Experience with AI-assisted software development tools and workflows
  • Valuable: GIS and geospatial data processing experience
  • Experience with APIs and cloud-based workflows
  • Experience in data engineering and visualization
  • Experience with environmental, hydrologic, or systems-modeling platforms
  • Experience contributing to or using integrated water-resources models or decision-support tools
  • Computer science degree plus at least five years of relevant professional experience in software development, scientific computing, or modeling systems
  • U.S. Citizen or Green Card (Permanent Resident Card) holder
