Senior Software Engineer, PostgreSQL Data Infrastructure (Remote, US)

Operate and scale petabyte-scale PostgreSQL systems supporting TRM Labs’ AI-powered crime intelligence platforms. Improve database performance and reliability, automate operations, and manage CDC pipelines while working remotely with distributed teams.

Description

  • Build and operate relational databases that serve petabyte-scale workloads.
  • Own the database serving layer, including query performance, costs, and availability.
  • Maintain five-nines performance and availability for customer-facing APIs through query tuning, index design, and schema optimization.
  • Apply AI-assisted analysis with pganalyze and Claude to deliver compression and data-model improvements.
  • Develop automated workflows for PgBouncer provisioning, disk scaling, and blue-green deployments.
  • Validate database changes before they reach production.
  • Operate change data capture (CDC) pipelines with PeerDB, Fivetran, and Debezium.
  • Use AI tools to investigate and resolve replication failures.
  • Migrate workloads from legacy infrastructure and prototype new data stores.
  • Develop AI-native runbooks and internal tools.
  • Work asynchronously with distributed colleagues during US and Canada business hours.
  • Join an on-call rotation about once every 15 days; each shift spans a 24-hour period across two days.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of experience building and operating production PostgreSQL systems, such as Citus, Aurora, AlloyDB, or comparable distributed Postgres.
  • Strong SQL optimization skills, including explain plans, CTEs, window functions, partitioning, index design, and query planner behavior in distributed environments.
  • Practical experience with CDC tools such as PeerDB, Fivetran, Debezium, Datastream, or Airbyte.
  • Proficiency in database profiling with pganalyze or an equivalent tool, including interpreting metrics and logs.
  • Production automation experience using Python or Go.
  • Regular use of AI coding tools such as Claude or Copilot.
  • Demonstrated use of AI-assisted analysis to achieve measurable production database cost or performance improvements.
  • Willingness and ability to join an on-call rotation.
  • Ability to work during US and Canada business hours.
  • Availability for in-person R&D work weeks and possible additional travel.
  • AI fluency is expected and assessed during interviews.

Benefits

  • In-person R&D work weeks, typically once or twice per quarter.
  • TRM arranges and covers approved travel, lodging, and workspace for work weeks.
  • Accommodations are available for legitimate caregiving, health, immigration, and similar constraints.
  • Competitive benefits, wellness programs, and time away from work, which vary by country and local employment requirements.
