Senior SCADA Engineer, Substations — Vancouver Onsite
Lead automation, protection, and control engineering for Qualus utility and renewable energy clients. Deliver high-voltage substation projects from early design through testing and commissioning.
Description
- Lead engineers and designers delivering automation, protection, control, and communications systems for high-voltage substations
- Act as Technical Lead, directing automation design from concept development through construction and commissioning
- Create and evaluate automation philosophies and related application documentation
- Configure and review RTU, PLC, HMI, SCADA, and communications systems and their documentation
- Produce and assess one-line diagrams, schematics, logic diagrams, panel layouts, and wiring drawings
- Support automation integration for utility transmission and distribution substations
- Lead or contribute to design reviews, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and field inspections
- Assist with construction support, outage planning, commissioning, and troubleshooting
- Join client technical meetings, Safety by Design sessions, and constructability reviews
- Prepare or evaluate project scopes, feasibility studies, estimates, and definition-stage deliverables
- Serve as a technical contact for clients and external partners on assigned projects
- Mentor junior engineers and help improve automation standards, tools, and engineering practices
Requirements
- Bring 8–15 years of utility-focused experience in automation, protection, control, and metering engineering
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
- Be eligible for, or already hold, Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration in Canada
- Have experience with utility automation technologies, including SCADA, RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, telemetry, and substation communications
- Understand DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850 protocols
- Have developed and reviewed automation deliverables such as logic diagrams, RTU and PLC configurations, communications architecture drawings, one-lines, schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams
- Be familiar with integrating automation systems into high-voltage transmission and distribution substations
- Understand substation construction, commissioning, and outage planning practices
- Have supported system testing, troubleshooting, and field commissioning
- Communicate effectively in both written and spoken form
- EPC project experience and knowledge of utility maintenance and operations are valuable assets
