Senior Precision Mechanical Designer - Remote in Idaho

Remote senior designer responsible for precision mechanical drawings, 3D parametric models, GD&T documentation, and fabrication support for Idaho National Laboratory projects. The role supports installation and mission-critical DOE and DoD work, with occasional onsite assistance at the Materials and Fuels Complex.

Description

  • Convert engineering requirements into detailed drawings, 3D parametric models, assemblies, and technical documents for fabrication and installation.
  • Create and update 2D drawings, 3D parametric models, assemblies, and related documentation from approved engineering inputs.
  • Produce drawings that specify geometry, interfaces, materials, finishes, processes, tolerances, inspection criteria, and assembly relationships.
  • Use GD&T in compliance with ASME Y14.5-2009.
  • Assess tolerance stack-ups and fit across part and assembly interfaces.
  • Use disciplined parametric modeling methods, including fully constrained sketches, stable design intent, controlled references, and well-organized assemblies.
  • Independently review drawings and models for accuracy, completeness, fit, form, function, manufacturability, inspectability, and standards compliance.
  • Confirm the accuracy of bills of material, parts lists, item balloons, quantities, references, notes, weld symbols, and revision data.
  • Preserve drawing and model integrity through document control, revision management, configuration management, and records procedures.
  • Address technical review feedback and maintain an auditable change history.
  • Work with engineers, designers, fabricators, and inspectors to clarify requirements and resolve inconsistencies.
  • Prioritize assigned work, report progress, and communicate scope, resource, or schedule risks.
  • Help reduce drafting backlogs and mentor drafting staff when requested.
  • Complete additional responsibilities assigned by the BEA Technical Point of Contact.
  • Provide occasional onsite support at Idaho National Laboratory's Materials and Fuels Complex as required.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in science from an accredited institution plus at least five years of relevant experience, or at least ten years of relevant experience without a degree.
  • At least three years of experience using PTC Creo.
  • Sufficient PTC Creo proficiency to contribute immediately.
  • Expertise in precision mechanical design, including 3D parametric modeling, part and assembly detailing, and fabrication drawings.
  • Ability to apply GD&T under ASME Y14.5-2009 and assess tolerance accumulation and fit at part and assembly interfaces.
  • Experience independently reviewing drawings and models for accuracy, completeness, manufacturability, inspectability, and applicable standards compliance.
  • Ability to interpret engineering specifications, calculations, vendor information, and redlines while maintaining design intent.
  • Working knowledge of materials, machining, welding, fabrication, inspection, and assembly practices.
  • Experience with drawing revision control and configuration management procedures.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work the assigned Mountain Time schedule and report onsite at MFC when needed.
  • Preferred: Experience with Windchill or a comparable product data management platform, including PDM or Vault.
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Preferred: Experience coordinating multidisciplinary drawing packages and resolving feedback from engineers, fabricators, and inspectors.
  • Preferred: Experience mentoring drafting staff in modeling, detailing, drawing reviews, and GD&T use.
  • Preferred: Experience overseeing drafting workloads, reducing backlogs, and tracking progress against project schedules.
  • Preferred: Previous DOE/NNSA experience.
