Senior PHP Symfony Engineer - United Kingdom Remote

Lead backend development for Smart Working’s enterprise marketing and revenue data platform using PHP and Symfony. Modernise the Symfony stack, strengthen scalability, and contribute across Angular, TypeScript, and AI services.

Description

  • Own backend development for the core Symfony application
  • Work independently and deliver effectively within 2–3 months of joining
  • Review, test, and challenge code produced by team members and AI tools
  • Help migrate the application from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7
  • Address versioning, compatibility, and legacy-system issues
  • Enhance application performance, scalability, and maintainability
  • Contribute across the Angular frontend, TypeScript, and Python-based AI agent services
  • Coordinate with DevOps when backend changes affect other system areas
  • Build a working understanding of the Angular and TypeScript codebase
  • Evaluate the broader effects of technical decisions across Symfony, Angular, and AI services
  • Trace issues to their root causes and improve existing solutions
  • Create maintainable solutions within a legacy codebase
  • Work autonomously while partnering with a remote, cross-functional team
  • Comply with SOC 2, PII, and security requirements

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of commercial software engineering experience, including 5 or more years with PHP
  • At least 7 years of expert-level PHP development experience
  • At least 3 years of recent commercial experience with Symfony 6.x or 7 at an advanced level
  • At least 4 years of advanced experience in backend architecture, system design, and scalability
  • At least 2 years of advanced experience critically using AI development tools to review, validate, and challenge generated code
  • At least 5 years of advanced MySQL experience, including schema design and query optimisation
  • At least 1 year of experience with or understanding of Angular and TypeScript
  • At least 3 years of advanced experience with automated PHPUnit testing
  • At least 1 year of intermediate experience upgrading frameworks and modernising legacy codebases
  • At least 2 years of intermediate AWS experience
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective remote collaboration
  • Availability to work UK hours
  • Ability to pass strict background checks and follow PII and data protection requirements
  • Strong self-sufficiency, with the ability to work independently after 2–3 months
  • A hands-on engineering approach paired with an architectural mindset
  • Nice to have: at least 2 years of intermediate CI/CD experience with GitHub Actions
  • Nice to have: basic experience with Amazon Redshift or data warehousing
  • Nice to have: exposure to Azure alongside AWS
  • Nice to have: previous project leadership experience
  • Nice to have: previous mentoring and technical leadership experience
