Senior Electrical Engineer

Lead complex engineering projects at American Electric Power, applying technical judgment and project management to advance safe, reliable energy systems. Guide engineering teams and coordinate work across disciplines, from planning and scheduling to budgets and technical reporting.

Description

  • Carry out complex engineering assignments and projects
  • Apply engineering expertise to meet objectives safely, effectively, efficiently, and economically
  • Stay current with new products, technologies, procedures, developments, and equipment
  • Assess how systems and component equipment interact
  • Interpret codes and regulations and develop applicable standards
  • Advise and direct fellow engineers
  • Lead and coordinate engineering activities across the organization and with external partners
  • Verify compliance with company policies, standards, regulations, and external agency procedures
  • Uphold professional engineering practices and standards
  • Plan and deliver training sessions
  • Set plans, measurable goals, objectives, and requirements
  • Coordinate project cost estimates and schedule work using CPM, PERT, and flow charts
  • Determine corrective steps when targets are missed
  • Resolve routine and complex issues and develop new methods
  • Coordinate engineering work and prepare or review detailed technical reports
  • Chair and facilitate meetings
  • Build working relationships across disciplines to move projects forward
  • Make decisions that shape departmental operations, plans, goals, and major projects
  • Oversee project budgets and evaluate effects on expenses and revenue

Requirements

  • Have at least four years of related engineering experience and a bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program, typically; alternatively, have two years of related experience and an engineering master's degree or PhD from an ABET-accredited program
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering technology is accepted if you obtain a certified Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Alternatively, hold a bachelor's degree in non-ABET engineering plus an engineering master's degree or PhD from a university with an ABET-accredited bachelor's program
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred
  • Apply advanced engineering expertise
  • Know relevant products, developments, technologies, procedures, equipment, systems, and component relationships
  • Interpret codes and regulations and develop standards
  • Use scheduling methods such as CPM, PERT, and flow charts
  • Analyze complex or conflicting information and solve problems
  • Prepare technical reports for management, professional societies, and regulatory bodies
  • Manage project budgets using cost-control methods
  • Make decisions amid uncertainty, risk, competing interests, and limited precedent
