Senior Database Engineer - Remote in the United States

Spreedly is seeking a senior database engineer to improve the performance, reliability, observability, and operational safety of distributed databases supporting its open payments platform.

Description

  • Enhance performance and reliability across Spreedly’s distributed database environment
  • Analyze bottlenecks and reliability threats through instrumentation, code reviews, and staging validation
  • Tune slow queries, indexes, and database configuration
  • Troubleshoot distributed-database problems such as transaction contention, retries, hot ranges, and inefficient access patterns
  • Define and maintain database performance baselines
  • Guide engineering teams on schema migrations, access patterns, and configuration updates
  • Review designs involving schemas, primary keys, indexing, and transaction boundaries
  • Provide database expertise during incidents and root-cause investigations
  • Create safer migration processes, documentation, and operational guidance
  • Manage database version upgrades, backup and recovery testing, cluster configuration, and capacity planning
  • Strengthen observability for latency, retries, contention, range health, and capacity
  • Coordinate with Cockroach Labs on the managed database environment
  • Work closely with infrastructure, platform, and application engineering teams
  • Coach engineers in database troubleshooting, performance optimization, and distributed-database principles
  • Act as the Reliability team’s database authority in a senior individual-contributor role without direct reports

Requirements

  • At least five years of professional experience primarily focused on operating and optimizing production databases
  • Extensive hands-on experience managing distributed databases, including performance and high-availability behavior
  • Hands-on administration of relational databases that support business-critical production systems
  • Demonstrated success identifying database inefficiencies and achieving measurable gains in queries, indexing, schemas, or configuration
  • Advanced SQL skills, including execution plans, transaction management, and distributed-SQL trade-offs
  • Ability to evaluate database-change risks and communicate technical trade-offs clearly
  • Self-directed ability to investigate unfamiliar systems, set priorities, and deliver improvements
  • Thoughtful and collaborative approach to working with others
  • Production experience administering CockroachDB at significant transaction volumes
  • Experience administering PostgreSQL
  • Experience operating managed database services and collaborating with vendor support and engineering teams
  • Experience performing zero- or minimal-downtime schema migrations on large, high-traffic tables
  • Background supporting payments, financial technology, or other platforms where availability is critical
  • Experience with database capacity planning and cluster sizing, including multi-region architectures
  • Experience creating operational tools or checks with Python, Go, or comparable languages
  • Familiarity with ORMs such as Rails ActiveRecord
  • Cloud operations experience with AWS or Azure
  • Database-oriented cloud certifications are advantageous
  • CockroachDB or PostgreSQL experience is not mandatory when equivalent depth in distributed database management is demonstrated
  • Current legal authorization to work in the job-location country without requiring future sponsorship
  • Successful completion of background and reference checks
  • Applicants must not live in New York
