Senior Cloud Engineer - Chicago Onsite

Baker Tilly US is seeking a Senior Cloud Engineer to design and operate AWS, Azure, and multi-cloud infrastructure supporting advisory and accounting services. The role focuses on infrastructure as code, automation, reliability, security, and compliance.

Description

  • Design, deploy, and operate scalable infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and other cloud platforms
  • Build and enhance foundational services and standardized patterns for identity, networking, observability, compute, storage, and security
  • Manage the full lifecycle of critical services, including upgrades, deprecation planning, and operational readiness
  • Create and maintain reusable infrastructure-as-code modules and standardized implementations with Terraform, Ansible, and Bicep
  • Set expectations for code quality through reviews, documentation, version control, and validation
  • Develop automation workflows and Python, PowerShell, and Bash scripts to reduce manual operational work
  • Take ownership of reliability results for cloud services
  • Lead incident troubleshooting and root cause analysis, then deliver preventative improvements
  • Create and refine runbooks, monitoring standards, alerting practices, and support models
  • Implement cloud security and compliance guardrails, patterns, and technical controls in partnership with Security and Risk
  • Help prepare for audits by supporting evidence collection and control implementation
  • Design and test backup, recovery, and resilience strategies
  • Lead improvements to patching and vulnerability management through automation
  • Convert requirements into cloud-first architectures, delivery plans, and technical roadmaps
  • Mentor engineers through pairing, code reviews, and knowledge sharing
  • Provide technical direction across teams and influence engineering standards and decisions

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree is required
  • At least five years of experience in cloud engineering, infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, or a related field
  • Hands-on engineering experience with at least two major cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI
  • Strong infrastructure-as-code expertise, including Terraform and/or Ansible module development and pattern standardization
  • Strong scripting and automation capabilities in Python, PowerShell, Bash, or an equivalent language
  • Experience implementing or materially improving CI/CD practices for infrastructure delivery
  • Demonstrated operational ownership across incident response, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and preventative remediation
  • Two or more relevant cloud certifications are preferred
  • Working knowledge of multi-cloud architecture and operations
  • Knowledge of foundational cloud services and standard patterns for identity, networking, logging and monitoring, compute, storage, and security
  • Knowledge of operational excellence practices, including runbooks, monitoring, alerting, operational readiness, and service lifecycle management
  • Knowledge of security and compliance implementation patterns and audit preparation
  • Ability to own service reliability and reduce operational toil through automation
  • Ability to turn business needs into technical designs, implementation plans, and roadmaps
  • Ability to mentor engineers and shape cross-team engineering patterns
  • Experience with container platforms and orchestration is preferred
  • Knowledge of cloud governance and guardrails is preferred
  • Knowledge of centralized logging and security monitoring integrations is preferred
  • Experience working in regulated environments and supporting audit readiness is preferred
  • Experience with multi-region architectures, shared-services networking, and private connectivity is preferred
