Geomatics Officer, Archaeological Survey

Manage archaeological field surveys and GIS, CAD, and data quality processes. Support heritage projects for Cotswold Archaeology through a mix of office and fieldwork.

Description

  • Prepare, capture, and quality-check digital field survey data safely.
  • Configure, maintain, and secure field survey equipment.
  • Maintain field survey and digitised data quality from creation through final delivery.
  • Conduct field surveys and other on-site data collection when required.
  • Digitise site drawings and process and present archaeological data using CAD, GIS, and other geospatial tools.
  • Use ESRI ArcGIS Pro to process and query data and publish GIS and web map services.
  • Help plan and deliver staff training, particularly in surveying, GIS, and CAD.
  • Arrange equipment hire, raise purchase orders, and liaise with external hire companies.
  • Help allocate survey instruments to staff and projects.
  • Support the delivery and quality assurance of large, complex projects.
  • Contribute to fieldwork scheduling.
  • Build working relationships with fieldwork and geomatics teams, support and administrative colleagues, and clients.
  • Follow organisational policies and fire, health and safety, and safe-working procedures.

Requirements

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in archaeology or a related subject.
  • Field archaeology experience on evaluations, watching briefs, and excavations.
  • Strong understanding of archaeological survey principles.
  • Extensive knowledge of ESRI software, particularly proficiency with ArcGIS Pro.
  • Methodical approach to work and meeting deadlines.
  • Considerable experience conducting archaeological field surveys with GNSS and total station instruments, preferably Leica, and processing survey data.
  • Ability to clearly describe observations and interpretations from archaeological survey work.
  • Strong IT skills, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Commitment to professional archaeological standards.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for work and occasionally stay overnight.
  • Must already have the legal right to live and work in the UK under UK Visas and Immigration rules.
  • Desirable: experience teaching, training, or mentoring.
  • Desirable: experience contributing to project reports, publications, research, or outreach projects.
  • Desirable: experience in photography and photogrammetry.
  • Desirable: experience in archaeological building and earthwork survey.
  • Desirable: ability to configure and troubleshoot Leica GNSS and total station instruments.
  • Desirable: experience with remote data capture systems, including terrestrial and airborne solutions.
  • Desirable: experience with JavaScript, Python, LISP, and ModelBuilder.
  • Desirable: experience processing digitised and field survey data during post-excavation work.
  • Desirable: familiarity with Adobe Illustrator or other drawing software.
  • Desirable: CSCS card.
