Senior Cloud Architect – Remote in the US and Canada

Design and deliver cloud-native, data, and AI/ML systems for Robots & Pencils, an applied AI engineering firm. This remote full-time role supports production enterprise solutions across the US and Canada.

Description

  • Shape architecture for cloud, data, and AI/ML systems while owning substantial technical components
  • Develop and connect cloud-native workloads using microservices, serverless patterns, and containers
  • Build infrastructure-as-code configurations and continuous integration and delivery pipelines
  • Create and enhance data architectures spanning pipelines, warehouses, and data modeling
  • Contribute to AI/ML architecture, including model serving, MLOps workflows, and LLM capability integration
  • Deploy monitoring, logging, and observability for production systems
  • Partner with engineering, data, AI, and product teams to turn requirements into technical designs
  • Explain technical tradeoffs and architectural decisions to cross-functional stakeholders
  • Keep architecture documentation accurate and current
  • Take part in technical design reviews
  • Own system components while expanding architectural scope and accountability
  • Help establish architecture standards and engineering best practices
  • Coach junior engineers and contribute to their professional development

Requirements

  • Applicants must be located in Canada or the United States
  • At least five years of professional software engineering experience, including exposure to architectural decisions
  • Practical knowledge of cloud platforms and cloud-native design, including AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Proficiency in Python plus another modern programming language such as Java, Scala, or TypeScript
  • Hands-on experience with container technologies and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience creating infrastructure as code and CI/CD workflows with tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, and GitHub Actions
  • Working knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases, data pipelines, and ETL/ELT practices, including PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Airflow, and dbt
  • Familiarity with AI/ML architecture covering model deployment, MLOps, and LLM integration through tools such as SageMaker, Vertex AI, MLflow, and Hugging Face
  • Understanding of microservice, serverless, and event-driven architecture patterns
  • Awareness of security, compliance, and observability principles, including GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC2
  • Demonstrated use of AI-focused tools such as Claude and Cursor
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability when addressing ambiguous technical problems
