Senior BAS Controls Designer

Lead DDC controls design for HVAC, lighting, and energy management systems at Ameresco. Improve engineering workflows, mentor design teams, and support building automation installation and commissioning.

Description

  • Lead DDC controls design for HVAC, lighting, energy management, and related building systems
  • Produce system architecture diagrams, wiring schematics, control panel layouts, and sequences of operation
  • Verify designs against project specifications, building codes, industry standards, and client requirements
  • Select and specify controllers, sensors, actuators, and related control components
  • Improve engineering processes to increase efficiency, shorten design cycles, and promote consistency
  • Create and maintain standard procedures, templates, and design libraries
  • Evaluate and implement tools that improve design quality and productivity
  • Gather stakeholder feedback and support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Track KPIs to assess the results of process improvements
  • Work with project engineers, managers, and clients to define requirements and convert them into designs
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior designers and engineers
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers on component compatibility, quality, and delivery
  • Connect design, project management, and installation teams throughout project execution
  • Review designs for accuracy, functionality, and compliance
  • Apply value engineering to optimize performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness
  • Maintain project documentation, including submittals, as-built drawings, and system narratives
  • Troubleshoot design issues for implementation teams during installation and commissioning
  • Keep current with DDC technologies, building automation developments, and engineering practices
  • Develop solutions that improve functionality, energy efficiency, and maintainability
  • Support Ameresco’s strategic growth and market position in DDC systems design

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • At least seven years of experience designing DDC control systems
  • A record of successfully leading projects
  • Proficiency with building automation protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, electrical wiring, control panel design, and applicable building codes
  • Advanced experience with CAD software and controls design tools
  • Experience with process improvement methods is preferred
  • Demonstrated success implementing improvements and streamlining engineering workflows
  • Excellent problem-solving ability and close attention to detail
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
