Senior Backend Developer, Java and Spring Batch – Remote in Spain
Modernize COBOL mainframe systems into Java and Spring Batch architectures while applying AI agents, automation, and advanced testing across the software development lifecycle.
Description
- Analyze COBOL programs and JCL flows to understand dependencies, functional logic, and batch processes
- Design and implement target architectures using Java, Spring Boot, and Spring Batch
- Define jobs, steps, readers and writers, chunk processing, restart strategies, error handling, and return codes
- Create and maintain specifications using Spec-Driven Development approaches
- Build and optimize AI agents and development automations, including Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot Agents
- Implement validation and functional-equivalence mechanisms between legacy systems and modernized solutions
- Design and execute testing strategies, including Golden Master, mutation testing, regression testing, and result comparison
- Analyze quality, productivity, and cost metrics across the development pipeline
- Propose continuous improvements to architecture, automation, and quality
- Contribute to a strategic technology-modernization project and develop AI tools and agents for the SDLC
Requirements
- More than 5 years of Java development experience
- Strong experience with Spring Core, Spring Boot, Spring Data, and Spring Batch
- Production experience with complex batch processes, large data volumes, reprocessing, and fault tolerance
- Knowledge of batch architectures, systems integration, and file processing
- Ability to analyze COBOL, JCL, copybooks, and embedded SQL
- Experience applying AI to the development lifecycle, including prompt engineering, AI agents, LLM response evaluation, and hallucination control
- Experience with advanced testing, including mutation testing, test automation, edge cases, and oracle design
- Knowledge of Git Bash and Python
- Comfort working in the terminal and advanced technical environments
- Professional English is valued
- Experience in banking mainframe environments, including z/OS, DB2, CICS, IMS, and Control-M, is valued
- Experience with COBOL-to-Java migrations and legacy application modernization is valued
- Knowledge of Spec-Driven Development and executable specifications is valued
- Experience with corporate batch frameworks, APX, Elara, and proprietary banking frameworks is valued
- Experience building pipelines with MCP, hooks, subagents, and quality gates is valued
- Experience measuring token cost, generation quality, and AI-assisted productivity is valued
