Residential Counselor, Developmental Disabilities

Support people with developmental disabilities in Vinfen’s residential program by building independent living skills, coordinating daily supports, and encouraging community participation.

Description

  • Provide individualized and group support in a residential program.
  • Teach skills that build independence, self-advocacy, and quality of life.
  • Keep the residence safe, secure, and clean.
  • Help residents participate in their communities and build and maintain friendships.
  • Connect residents with community-based services and resources.
  • Organize recreational and social activities that encourage inclusion and emotional well-being.
  • Support residents to make choices and decisions, advocate for themselves, and take part in support planning.
  • Help residents use assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
  • Encourage participation in work, volunteering, and other community activities.
  • Train and support residents in behavioral and rehabilitative strategies, safety, appointments, money management, daily living activities, shopping, meal planning, cooking, and household tasks.
  • Provide hands-on assistance and transportation as needed.
  • Observe residents’ physical and emotional well-being and report changes to a supervisor.
  • Track residents’ funds and maintain progress notes, behavior and academic data, incident records, and communication logs.
  • Handle medication procurement, storage, administration, documentation, and disposal in line with MAP requirements and applicable policies.
  • Coordinate with nurses, case managers, the Visiting Nurses Association, and other relevant parties.
  • Attend required training and staff meetings.
  • Follow applicable regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Complete housekeeping and home upkeep, including snow removal and taking out trash.
  • Complete required paperwork and logs, and cover shifts at other homes or programs when assigned.
  • Advocate for residents’ human rights and provide physical intervention or first aid in emergencies.
  • Help develop, carry out, and document treatment plans, ISP/PSTPs, and clinical programs.
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Related experience or training of at least one year is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver’s license required at hire.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must have held a valid U.S. driver’s license for at least six months.
  • Must pass a driver screening and background check.
  • If using a personal vehicle, must have adequate insurance and a safe driving record.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, lift at least 25 pounds, and assist people with daily living activities.
  • Ability to operate a computer, calculator, copier, and printer.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of advocacy, communication, empowerment, self-advocacy, participatory planning, household management, and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Sensitivity to cultural, religious, racial, disability, and gender-related concerns.
  • CPR certification required within two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification required within two weeks of hire.
  • MAP certification required within 150 days of hire.
  • PBS Tier 1 certification required within 150 days of hire.
  • Safety Care certification required within 90 days of hire.
